Worth of the "In Old Arizona"
film which oncned its four days 1
engagement at Hunt's Craterlan :
theater yesterday to run evory
afternoon nd nicht until Sunday, ;
and famed as tho first sound mov- ,
Ing picture made out In the open, j
was shown last nifiht when many !
of tho capacity audience romalned j
to view te second show. So great
Is the appeal in Its naturalness of j
tliis triily great attraction, where
the largo cast o?. prominent stage
and movie actors speak and act '
their parts euperb'ly. while the
eyes, feast on desert, plain and !
boulder eciiery of grandeur.
Another feature illustrating - the
lbsorbing- ennrm of the film
is that most of tho hundreds at Its
conclusion,' as soon- as they got
overmnrvellns nt the climax, ex
claimed each one to his neighbor.
'Why, It's over . already must
navo been a short show,'1- so en
grossed had they been In tho plot
nnd acting that they did not real
ize that the film is a lorn one. The
praises of "In Old Arizona" are
sounded ovor tho city and valley
today. Opinion this timo Is all one j
way, which probably indicates J
crowded houses the remainder of i
the week. -.
to realistic Is tho entertainment
in its acting, sounds nnd scenery,
that the audiences last night came
away hungry for ham and eggs.
They had seen it sizzling in a skil
let, and imagined they smelled it's
enticing ordor. They also felt like
brushing imaginary dust from
their eyes and off their clothes,
arising from the galloping horses
and stage coach, and from the
moving cattle herds. Anyhow they
could hear those cattle bellowing,
and a pig squealing, In their sleep
last night.
In Old Arizona while having
much of cowboys, half-breeds, cat
tle and the like should not be con
fused with the best of Westerns.
In fact It Is a Southwestern, so ex
cellently different In every way,
and all in a class by itself. .
- It has dramatic thrills, suspense,
a love theme, humor and punch
a stoi-y of two brave, real he had
men striving for the love of a
beautiful, double - crossing, ex
tremely likeable and Cnrmen-llke
half-breed woman, it might be
called a "single" as Veil as talkie.
While Warner Baxter, Edmund
Lowe and Dorothy Burgess are the
featured players, they aro sur
rounded by a wonderful support
ing cast. prominent lending stage
and film actors play minor pnrts
some of thorn eyen little tid-blts.
In the cast aro such well known
actors as l-'erroll McDonald, Frank
Cnmpeau, Hoy Stewart, Henry Ar
metta, Tom - Snntsohl, Pat Hnrli
gun, James Marcus : and Joe
Brown. ' T
But tho outstanding perfor
mance Is that of Warren Baxter,
portraying tho handsome, brave,
cruel nnd singing Portuguese ban
dit. His vibrating, pleasing voice
has a magnetic appeal both In
talking, riialogun nnd singing. The
......v wi i'uiuui uui!m, unnrin-i
in juuiik ucircKH, wno is a now
screen find, as tho beautiful half
breed girl, stands out notably, as
does that of Kdmund Lowo, as tho
brave, swaggering and lovable
army sergeant.
Yes, "In Old Arizona" Is good,
very good. It is all so natural.
