fVu can't lax ua ifto banks bo
causa we're not like banks in many
respectB. It's either all not laconic
np none. 1 can't set an arbltrarv
figure," declared Oliver C. Hosns
of .Medford, in opposing the build
ing and loan clause in house hill
No. 279, which proitoses an excise
tax. A bearing wns held on the
bill Wednesday and was larselv at
tended by nkins men or the
os into.
"There, Is a clause deducting all
intereiou deposits in banks, but
the building and loan associations
are only allowed a limited exemp
tion. The mutual loan companies
exiet only to build homes and you
tax their deposits. Our Income is
what wo have left after deducting
expenses or operation and what we
pay for money. We are much likj
a bank, except that we must pay
more for money, iianks pay 4 per
cent, while wo must pay 7 and S
per cent. It Is a case of supply
and demand entirely. Every bor
rower must buy stock eiiunl to the
loan. Why should a borrower pat
more than one who owns his home';
We have no other source of reve
nue than what the home owner
pays us and if you tax us yoij fax
the home owner," he said.
After some discussion about a
tax. Representative John II. Carkin
of Medford asked, "What would be i
a tair taxT '
"You mean a franchise tax?" re
plied Mr. Bog'js.
"Yea, how much?" said Catkin.
"About $50 for the size of our
company would be about rlRht,"
Eoggs answered.
The bill, which has caused con
siderable Interest In the state, is
now in the hands of the bouse com
mittee ou taxation and revenue,
awaiting additional hearings on the
measure.
