RIVER ICE HELPS
FLOOD OF BOOZE
TO DETROIT IE
TORONTO. Out., Jan. 2.".. oPi
Opportunities afforded liquor
?inugKler$ by the frozen Detroit
river were described by the To
rutiio Cilobe today as follows:
Six inches of river ice inter
rupted by less than 1 t'O feet of
(pen water, coupled with the fact
th.ft Sumner C. Sleeper, chief of
the Detroit customs patrol, and a
ikwu r.f his men had thrown up
their jobs, presented to the rum
trafficking fraternity nn opportun
ity which they have been denied
d for many months.
Taking advantage of the situa
tion the smugglers speeded up pro
duction and by using nmall auto
lnoMlc, sleighs and even old-fashioned
toboggans, .succeeded in
transport Ins an undetermined
quantity of lit nor and Canadian
beer to Detroit and Its environs.
The operations were carried on
boldly and in the sight of hun
dreds of spectators who lined the
shores to watch the progress of the
scores of caravans over the frozen
waste.
In several instances small cars
were observed hitched to boats
with slcl runners which whisked
them across in express lime. When
the open stretch of water was en
countered the boats were utilized.
Further down, the river the ice
was solid all the way across and
tho boats wero dispensed with, on
the Detroit side large vans labelled
'furniture and express were obsci v
( ed speeding away from the river
a within a few minutes after a cargo
had landed. There was no attempt
at interference at any time, so far
us reported.
In one place n small rowboat,
idled high with beer cartons, was
having trouble picking its way
through the openings in the ice
field. There were four men in the
boat and each poled manfully to
get -their little craft through. In
all It was a real field day for the
fraternity.
