THE ROTARIAN DEFENDED
npIIH Aiiterietiii tiitsini'KK unit) is not the struw ilmnniy benr-
iiif tin; Iiibel "Kotiiriini" tlmt Jf. I. Mencken anil others
of the "intelliKciitzia" liuve flayed mercilessly, lie is, on the
contrary, the force liohind tin; tremendous growth of the coun
try, responsible for the present era of prosperity.
This is the way Hooth Tarl(injlon, noted novelist, views
him, writing in the current issue of World's Work.
Cltiii'les Dickens made the saiiiu mistake as Mencken and his
cohorts, Mr. Tarkinnfon asserts, in ".Martin Chu.zlewit," pub
lished in the '10s, which was greatly resented here for its at
tack mi the .American business man of the period.
"Nowadays such an attack,
ture, patriotism and business ethics, would rouse little feeling
among readers and would probably be highly approved by most
of the book reviewers and by the more sophisticated literarv
people generally," the novelist
flic business man has not benefited by the criticisms, the
shafts have not reached him; indeed he is too busy to be mon
dial) vaguely aware of them. He has grown and. improved with
the growth and improvement of the cities be builds and loved
so passionately ; fur their growth and improvement, indeed, is
but the projection of his own. lie has improved hiinself not
because of the criticisms of the sophisticates but because of
his own immense ambition, his observation of his own experi
ence, the ever increasing energy of his .imagination, and that
passion of his lor the enlarging ami bettering of everything
his business, his city mid his country.'' I
His World's Work article maintains that the reason lite sa
tirists' shafts have failed to reach home is "because the mark
at which they are shot exists principally in the archers' imagi
nation." ' t
"To change. I lie figure, the sophisticated salirists have made
a man of straw and Uooster's phrases and put,the label 'Kota
riitn' upon it; then, assaulting it, they believe the onslaught
to be something actual, the American business man. They bold
this belief because their annoyance wilh sporadic cases of bla
tant 'go-getterism' has interfered with accuracy of observation;
their condition is like that of a man who, disturbed by n roost
er's crowing, swears that all eggs are bad."

to fee him. For him it symbolized I he best.
Koilin once said of. a writer that he "had the gravy but not
the rabbit." lie explained that, he meant .that he had the polish
and cleverness but lacked the fundamental sincerity.
A generation ago an orator who had great ability brought
some of his friends to see him sway a crowd.
At one point when he held his audience spellbound with an
appeal so high that there were few dry eyes, he was seen to
wink at the box in which his friends sat.
It was only a few years later that the sixth sense of the
people detected that he was insincere and with the discovery his
intluenee fell dead "like a candle at sunrise."
The world is rigidly hesitant about accepting great abilities
urn! fine manners until the accompaniment of sincerity is as
sured. 1
The world falls into two pretty distinct groups: those who
