Portland traveling salesman, walk
ed into Seattle police headquarters

had struck and fatally Injured
Charles C. Curtis. Seattle attorney,
last Friday night.
Olson had helped firemen take
Curtis to the city hospital, but
left without making a report of the
aerjrlent. A coast-wide search for
him failed and his identity was un
known until he walked Into the
Portland police station last night
and surrendered himself. Portland
officers permitted him to come to
Seattle alone.
Olson told iKilice that lie had
been In poor health lately and that
when he struck Curtis he "went
all to pieces." He said that lie did
his best to avoid striking Curtis.

The dues, be the same worth
nothing, or rno, are listed at a
valuation of $10. The average
worth of a Jackson county dog,
however, is only SS.9S, because a
field deputy made a mistake and
mixed in a goat and few turkeys
which brought down the total.
Some ranches in the county have
eight or ten dogs, the assessor says
which eat more than they are
worth. The owner uses them to
trail conns and bTibcats, ami it
keeps him busy catching varmints
to keep-his .varmint dogs alive.
The cits are another proposi
tion. According to the assessor,
the ordinary housecat is not worth
the ink used in placing him upon
the tax rolls. The .Maltese,
Angoras, and .Persians, when the
assessor cullK. crawl under the
house, the same us a low-bred cat,
and can not be caught 4to be
assessed. If a fancy cat does show
up during the visit of a field asses
sor, they belong to a neighbor, or
are being kept fur a lady spending
the winter at hong Jleach. Mr.
Coleman sees no hope of getting
any taxation out of cats.
The suggestion made at . the
meeting of the state tax commis
sion that household goods he
taxed, with a S;i0() exemption, was
listed by Assessor Coleman its
"nothing but a botheration," with
the observation "that it would
take a hard-hearted court to" levy
on a cookstove, because a young
married couple failed to pay.'
Mr. Coleman thought that as
sessing Persian rugs would yield a
neat revenue, if then- were as
many Persian rugs throughout the
stale as there are in Multnomah
county. He opposed the proposed
tax on household effects, as going
too far, and impossible.
