Once most of them were modest

tre, at political rallies, at recep
tions, at informal parties and even
in the Bupper clubs where gather
the noted and the notorious.
Most obliging among the objects
of their quest Is Texas Guinan,
who often signs her name a hun
dred times ft night, and who can
sit on the arm of a toj-er chair-nt
a theatre Intermission and auto
graph one album after another
without dropping a stitch of con'
versatlon with her companions. But
no less sought after arc a score of
others il'e.gy Hopkins Joyce, Will
Rogers, Mayor Walker. Amelia
lint hart and Beatrice Llllie, to
name a few.
And probably nobody is besought
so often or so arduously for his au
tograph as is Charles A. Lindbergh
whenever he appears in public
for his name has not only an ama
teur's senlimontal value, but real
intrinsic worth.
Tricks Are Futile
Lindbergh's name on the loot of
a letter Ik worth something like
JS'i right now. In the professional
autograph collector's market, and
such trophies are scarce, for the
colonel is extremely cautious about
inditing his signature. lie obliges
amateurs often enough, when he
can do so without bringing scores
of album holders pushing to his
side, hut a mere signature standing
by itself is of much less value to
the commercial collector than let
ters with his name, and the latter
are hard to get.
Some professional collectors have
camped in his wake for weeks
have written all sorts of letters
and asked him in vain to affix his
name, have sent him gift after gift
In the futile hope of getting an ac
knowledgment from his personally.
One collector threatened to Jump
from the Brooklyn bridge If Lind
bergh didn't oblige him, and the
aviator was unmoved. He wrote
him representing himself as a
childhood friend and then as an
aviator who had been Injured. The
colonel saw through all the false
whiskers.
Mr. 8haw Relents
Few contemporary heroes have
signatures of any such immediate
value as Lindbergh's. Presidents'
signatures -are worth something,
but generally they are not too dif
ficult to obtain. George Bernard
Shaw's autograph Is a real prlic,
and a New York girl rime home
from Europe Jubilantly this fall
with the signature of Hhaw in her
album. She related that she had
run across the famous British play
wright and author at a continental
! watetlng place, mrt had approached
I him one morning after breakfast to
auk that ho write his name in her
album Unabashed. she said,
"What's the matter. cSn't you
'write?" and thrustin-'r the album at
:hlm again, demanded:. "Just make
i your mark then." Shaw grinned,
resetted for the book and wrote his

Barrymore Talkies
Lionel Barrymore. hy the way,
has finished directing his first
two-reel talking picture, "Confes
sion." Barrymore became so inter
ested In talking pictures while
playing in them that ho persuaded
Mctro-Goldwyn-Maycr to let him
dlroct some. Another player turn
ing talkie-director Is Lowell Sher
man,' whose flret production Is a
screen version of "BMpns," already
familiar to many theatergoers as
a one-act play. Only three charac
ters appear in "Phipps," and Sher
man himself plays one of them.
