A Good King Dying. .
Cook Stove Slavery.
They Want to Fight.
To Protect U. S. Oil.
(Copyright, 1928, by Star Co.)
Deep sorrow in Britain. The
king, unconscious nil of Tues
day, seems te linve no chance
of recovery. His oldest son,
coming in haste from his work
for the empire of Africa, ar
rived in time to see his father
alive, however.
The world's sympathy is with
the Hritish people, and with
King George, a good father, a
good husband, wise king, good
citizen of the British empire,
obedient to law, devoted to
duty. '
There have been greater
kings, like Henry the Eighth;
more spectacular kings, like
liiehiird the Lion Hearted;
more constructive kings, per
haps, like Alfred the Great, or
William the Conqueror, who
brought French system into the
British islands. But there has
never been h BKTTKR king.
"When it was suggested, lung
ago. that big apartment houses
should contain numy families,
with one central heating plant,
and water supply, there was a
conservative hub-bub. ''You nre
trying to break up the Ameri
can family. That family will
always live in its own separate
home under its own roof."
Nevertheless, big department
houses were built. ;

lions of women, tied to cook
ing stoves, should be set free
from I hat drudgery. Commun
ity kitchens, cooking food prop
erly, carefully, scientifically,
and would deliver food to the
homes.
A good suggestion. It would
enable women to use their
brains for thinking, instead of
working.
The idea isn't entirely new.
Those engaged in manufactur
ing prepared foods, breakfast
foods, soups, preserved fruits
and other products, help to
minimize "kitchen slavery."
Paraguay and Bolivia think
they want to fight, because a
boundary dispute . killed 25
men. The remedy suggested is
to start a war and kill 25,000
more menl
This war. threat comes at an
awkward time, when the Kel
logg treaty is presented to the
Senate as a "sure cure" for
war.
,
The difficult thing is to keep
from fighting those that want
'to fight. Big countries like the
United States 51 If HIT, but
"WON'T, say to the little coun
tries: "If you fight, 'we shall
send men in airplanes and shoot
you." That would only be
adding more shooting to the
world's trouble, besides we
haven't got the airplanes. Bo
livia, asked to accept arbitra
tion, says: "No, I won't."
"What can you do about that!
"Uecovery is brisk." were the
words from Wall Street yesterday,
when the ticker slopped tlcklni!.
nnd the worried speculators took
their headaches home feelins bet
ter. In a country no rich, It Is
hard for the bears to scare even
the most foolish balls thoroughly.
Sooner or Inter, of course, the
Kumblers learn their lesson. Hut
with any kind of sound Judgment,
to keep apart from mere specula
tion. Investment In American se
curities Is the best in the world.

Th crowd surged forward

Amon;; the spectators was an old

had watched the changing of the

was seen that the bulletin was of a
somewhat reassuring character.
