District Attorney Chaney's Record
Told Over Radio By Tengwald
Carl V. Tengwald, for nuitiy years
prominent In fraternM and military
affairs of this city and euiinty, In a
radio addrcks over KM HI) spoke in
behalf nf Newton Chaney, Kepubli.
vun candidate fur district nnnrnt-y
for u. Heeond term, iih follows;
It Is my purpose to speak (o ymi
on behalf of Newton C. Chaiiey, the
Kcpublira n nminee f i- district
attorney of JackKoii county.
I feel personally well mctllficd to
speak for Mr. Chaney as it h:rs
been Illy pleasure to be asHiwiiite I
with him in the various activities of
ex-service men in numerous civic
enterprises and us a person Inter
ested in the welfare of the Repub

that in the various activities men.
Honed 1 have always found M i .
Chaney to be a whole-hearted indi
vidual whoso motives are alwn ys
kindly nnd whose every act is dic
tated by the highest of Ideals. Mr.
Chaney is what may be termed an
exceptionally human person with a
well-developed sense of fair play.
Newton C. Chaney was admitted
to the bar June K 1 1 2, by Sixth
Court of Civil Appeals of Texas.
lie practiced law for three and
one-half years In Hillsboro, Texas,
with the usual grist of petty cihc,
thrown in tho way of a stnitr!lnir
young lawyer, and was then ap
pointed county attorney of Mitchell
county, Texas, serving almost one
year.
Thereafter he held a position In
tho United Slates Depart men t of
Agriculture, He resigned January
1K, 1I18, to enter the army service
where he wan commissioned first
lieutenant.
Discharged November 30, Inly,
at Kort Itliss. Texas, after the war,
Mr. Chaney moved with his family
to Seattle, then to southern Oregon.
In May, liiLM, Mr. Chaney was
nominated by the Itepublloin party
of Jackson county for district attor
ney and was elected for four-year
term In the following November.
After a remarkably sueeessfnl term
us prosecutor of Jackson county,
especially along the lines of effi
cient, economical administration, he
was renominated decisively in
May of this year and Is now stand
ing for re-eleetlon on his record as
it faithful and skilled law enforce
ment official.
Mr. Chaney took tho oath of of
fice as district attorney four years
ago at a time when criminal law
enforcement was at a low ebb In
this country. I 'uder lovernor
Pierce's appointee all effort seemed
lo be concentrated on snooping
about private residences and busi
ness houses, hoping to locate a few
bottles of home brew or moonshine.
Tho agencies employed displayed
no ability In intercepting heavy rum
runners or in arresting; prosperous
bootleggers and whisky distributors
who were almost cpenly plying
their trade. When a contraband
Ihltior dealer happened to run
afoul of thi law he at once hired
an able lawyer, plead not guilty,
fought the case In court before a
Jury and almost invariably walked
out free to re-engage In his Illegal
traffic. Ami remember all this
futile am) profitless play at law
enforcement by helpless incompe
tents was casting the tuxp'iyers
large sums of money. When Chaney
was Inducted Into office I he liquor

after, official morals were at n low

near normal and the prohibit ion

the point where it may again be
used effectively, money on hand In
that fund , as of October '1, l!US,

Criminal law enforcement, ami
more especially prohibition law en

any county. When the people have
secured the services of a district
attorney who iu a term of four
years has been able to organ h'.e the
forces at his command lu such a
way as to enforce the prohibition
law In the most effect I ve ina um-r
