The Ashland Music Study club
will meet on Monday evening in
the parlor of the Presbyterian
church. The club plans to take up

'Mrs. Delia Dodge of Medford
visited lit Ashland on Thursday at
the home of Mrs. J. P. Dodge on
the Boulevard.
Considerable disappointment has
been expressed over the cancella
tion of the football game scheduled
between the Albany ' college team
and that of the Southern Oregon
Normal school. Last year Albany
cancelled its date nt a late date
but the normal brought the Al
bany team to Ashland at a con
siderable epen.se. The guarantee
included the provision that l.he
Southern Oregon Normal school
team should be entertained at
Albany this year on Oct. J'.ith.
Mr. and Mrs. K. Cliff Payne on
C.ranlte street entertained a group
of friends at dinner recently In
honor of their KranddatiRhter,
Marilyn Hae Voting and their
friend Raymond Fish of Phoenix.
The event was a celebration of the
birthday anniversaries of the two
honor guests. The dining table
was attractively decorated in a
color scheme of pink and white.
Pink carnations formed the beau
'tiful center piece and pink tapers
and attractive place cards com
pleted the dainty table appoint
ments. Two fine birthday cakes,
with lighted tapers, graced the
table. Those who celebrated in
honor of little Marilyn Mae and
Mr. Fish were Mr. and Mrs.

Clark ll. French, well known
Ashland man who resides on

ing on Tuesday and had the mis
fortune to bo lost in the fug near

relatives. Posses were sent into
the hills on Thursday morning and.

when Mr. French reached home
about 11 o'clock. Mr. French, who
Is the father of Mrs. Alice French
Willits. u teacher in the Washing
ton school, is 74 years of age and
his friends and relatives were
greatly concerned lest some mis
hap hud befallen him.
Mr. anil Mrs. Jack Tyrrell, who
reside on Jacksonville road were
in Ashland on Thursday in atten
dance at the teachers institute.
Meals were served each day at noon
in the lunch room at the. Washing
ton school.
The news of the death of Mrs.

friends of the family. Mrt and
Mrs. Nims and their sun Jack lived
in Ashland for many years, mov
ing to Han Frunclsco to reside a

to recovery. She passed away in a

When James Smith, deputy sheriff

with a tray of food, be was shot
and killed by the prisoner n the
city jail here last night. The pris
oner escaped.
Smith, who was arrested on a
charge of carrying concealed weap
ons here today, was searched thor
oughly and a gun taken away from
him when he was incarcerated, said
C. N. Moody, sheriff. It is believed
that a friend of the prisoner smug
gled the weapon through the bars.
