tion is over for Chicago's bad men.
Within a IM-hour period ended at
1 o'clock this! morning, they had
thrown two bombs one of which
rocked the loop, and shot a man
dead.
The man killed was Henjamin
llenjamin. 33, owner and manager
or the Standard Amusement com
pany, operating a carnival on the
north side. Kohbers in an auto
mobile stopped the machine in
which Penjamin was riding and
shot him down when they thought
he Intended to resist. They escap
ed with a pouch containing ST'Jl
in coin, other receipts of the com
pany had been taken lo Denjamin's
hotel a few minutes earlier,
The first bumbing wrecked the
front of the two-story brick plant
(n which lHpubllshcd the Star, at
Chltiigo Heights. Windows of the
business district of the suburb were
shattered for a block around. This
bombing was attributed hy King
Williams, editor of iho Star, to the
newspaper's edit o rial warfare
against gamblers.
"Cangsters have climaxed a se
ries of lawless acts in the attempt
lo suppress publicity of underworld
activities in Chieiigo Heights." Wil
liams said. "This latest outrage
is characti r.isllc of the utter dis
regard the criminal element has

The downtown Chicago bombing

Just outside the loop and within
a block of the llolel Sherman,

showered debris into the cellar.
Witnesses who were In the lobby
of the Hotel Alartiu, across the
street, said there had been no auto
mobile passing the place for sev
eral minutes before the explosion,
