The fate of the St. Louis Cardinals rests in the aged but baffling
right arm of Grover Cleveland Alexander, baseball critics say. If the
big pitcher, at 41, can regain his form they expect the Cards to pull
themselves from the slump that cost them the league lead.
LONG AUTO DRIVE!
MI3KOMIX12H, Mich., Aug. -'7..
() Walter Hagen, famous for his j
long drlvcH with a golf .stick, drove
300, miles out of bounds with his!
automobile yesterday.! '
After driving J li 0 r miles to this
city from Oshkosh, he found he
was seeking, not Menominee. Mich.,
but Menomonie, Wis., wheih is
about 300 miles dlstane, almost on
the Mississippi river.
Unable to make the journey
there in time, he telephoned his
apologies to the largo gallery that
had gathered there, and left for
Madison, Wis., where he was to
play today.

NKW YORK, Aug. 27. (ff)
More gnashing of teeth In tho camp
of the New York Yankees! Tony
Zazzeri, hard-hitting, agile fielding
second baseman of the champion,
may play no more baseball this
season.
Tony suffered a muscle Injury In
his shoulder during the Yankee's
last disastrous invasion of the west
and has been in only a few games
since. Kvery time he plays the
strain Is aggravated and It begins
to look like Miller Hugglns will
have to depend upon Ieo Durocher
at second base for tho balance of
the season.
With the Philadelphia Atheltics
only three games behind, I-azzerl's
absence from the lineup of the
champioiiH is serious. Not only is
Tony's hitting and fielding skill
missed, hut Mark Koonig, at short
stop, team better with Lnerl
than with any other second base
man Hugglns can uso.
Huggins Is authority for the
statement that Lazzcri may not
play again this year.
"I don't think Tony will bo able
to play again for the rest of the
season, " said the "mite" manager.
"I gave him a trial to see how his
arm acted. It's no good. He can't
throw and he's trying to get rid of
ball before it comes to him,
the
Kvery time he uses his arm he
only aggravates It. I think he has
torn u muscle In his shoulder. It's
; not serious but it might ,be if he
; kept on playing. Rest Is'the only
cure for it. '

on the more or less helpless east.
. It is no secret that John Mc
Oraw hopes to win the ennant
Just by these means. While tho

arc having It out west of the Allc-

(Hants Into first place, a strate
gic spot from which to view tho
third and final western Invasion
of tho east, beginning September
14.
In theory this 1b a good scheme.
But John didn't start out vory
well yesterday. The (Hants wero
outgamcd by tho Brooklyn Koblns,
I to 3. Del lllssonette picking tho
10th. Inning as the spot for Ills
20lh homo run of the season.
The St. Louis Cardinals, them
selves buffeted around In recent
weeks, again trimmed the helpless j
I hillies. 0 to 1. and lengthened j
their league lead to 3 Vi games;
ovr the '.Hants ami Chicago Cubs.
With Jim Uottomlcy bark in tho
lineup.- the Cards gave Woo Wll
llo Shordol excellent support and
battered three Phil pitchers for
10 hits. Hherdcl chalked up his
10th .victory of tho year.
The Cubs defeated the Boston
Braves, 0 to 3, for tho fourth
straight time snd moved to a tlo
with tho (l!ants In games won
and lost; although they aro no
better tlriin third 111 perienlago.
This apparent contradillon lies In
Die fact that the Cubs havo played
more gamos anil lost .more than
tho Giants. - With Klkl Cuyler
and Woody . English lending tho
offensive, the. Cubs battered Kent'
(Ireenfleld for 13 hlls, while Hal
Carlson, was holding the Ilravoa
to .five..
Finding their hold on fourth
place rather Insecure, the Cin
cinnati Beds downed Pittsburg,
4 to 3 and thus put two . full
games between themselves and
the 1927 pennant winners.
Braxton was the whole show as
Washington defeated clepebmd. 7

engagement. The senators' left
handcr, one of tho few con
sistent pitcher Bucky Harris has
now, allowed only flvo hits and
struck out seven men.
