Hoffman was once a mechanical

manager of a shoe store, asked
him one day why an engineer

steel shoe buckles. Hoffman start
ed to experiment with polishing

wife, Lena, saw a chance to turn
his successful experiments to pro
fit. She founded the business anil
now heads the family firm, altho
her husband has abandoned his
profession to handle the technical
part of the work ami to devise
carefully guarded color fomulae.

States military academy, up the

of them live in New York and
most of them learned their trade
in the city's tailor shops, -but their
work is done on the academy
grounds.
