. WASH DAY
In bygone days the village
wives put gull and wormwood In
their .lives hy wading deep in
Monday suds, and washing all
the household duds. At day
break when the .Monday came,
they started up their weary
game, and wrung and washed,
and .washed and wruug. until
their nerves were all unstrung:
ttey piled strong soap in heavy
cakes until their hones were full
of aches, inhaling steam and
iainted air. hut toiling on in sick
despair till all the clotheslines
In the town wllh garments white
were loaded down. It was in
deed a hitter task, and 'tis not
strange that they 'would ask why
wives were doomed to such a
chore, while men loafed around
the store. There was a feeling
then extant you've heard about
It from your aunt that washing
should he done by hand to -set
results supremely grand. Ma
chines would ruin every rag that
rested In the laundry bag; a
weary woman had to rub all day
above a steaming tub to get the
everlasting dirt from out her
husband's Sunday shirt 11' it
wore to the laundry sent, 'twould
be returned all ripped and rent,
the buttons cracked, cuffs de
stroyed, and father then would
be annoyed. It took the wives
a long, iung time to learn that
washday Is a crime, to find that
washin-T, by machine in modern
laundries, painted green, re
moves from women's lives an ill
that used to make their feet
grow chill. Now washday Is n
hollow form; a few observe it.
