AL SMITH AND
TlfK "New Kepufciiu" is Jin iiulepcnileftt journal of opinion,
published once it week in Now York Cit. anil like most
iiitlept'iHlont journals o vailed it lias always been consist
ently Democratic. Ii supporli'tl Wilson, ipposel Ilardim;. ami
has bitterly fought and sneered at President Coolidjie. Wliile
it hasn't as yet, eonie nut directly for Al Smith it has always
supported liiiu as lioveiimr of New York, and will no doubt
prefer him to Mr. Hoover, although its editor-in-chief,
understand, considers Hoover an abler man.
The followiii'i editorial from the New liepublie of July 'Sl
is therefore of unusual interest. For it shows clearly, wlit
Smith may lose New York stale, not because of his own rcc
ord, but because of his associates.
There will be thousands of New Yorkers, not averse to hav
ing Smith in the stale house tit Albany, who will do all they
can to keep him and liis Tammany ilk from the White House
Here is the editorial :
(iovernor Smith has Kiven Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey -City
an imortant post on his campaign hoard, and the reasons
for thin arc ohvious.
New Jersey Is one of the little Kroup of states without which
he certainly cannot win the election, and Mayor Hague is u
powerful Democratic boss. He is also, as it happens, one of (he
most notoriously and thoroughly debasin.-; forces in Attifrican
political life.
Tammany makes al least a pretense of being reformed anil
rejuvenated, hut Hague never applies any such mitral whitewash
to himself. If there Ir one good thing to he said about him or
his operations, we have never heard of it.
There seems to he no doubt that lie voted his Democratic
henchmen by the huudret! In the Republican primary In accord
ance with the terms of a prearranged inter-party deal.
When an honest citizen tried to tell the people of Jersey
f'ity some of the facts about Hague, he was beaten up by Hague's
Rervlle policemen, and rotten-eqKed by Ills etialiy servile
hangers-on.
Within a week after the Mayor had been made an outstand
ing member of the Smith entourage, lie. was on the witness
stand before a legislative committee IrylnR to explain why Jer
sey City paid son for a reservoir site which he had long
known it would be necessary to purchase, a site which had
been bought hy a dummy corKration a short time earlier for
l:! 5.000.
The association of Hague with the Smith cumpai-.'u may bo
of service In New Jersey, hut it will certainly do the Democrats
no good among the unattached progressive voters, in all the
stales, who will play such an Important part in this year's
campaign.

I've n vcr be n a candidate
fur any office. Miiall or great,
although my friends ami m-igb-hors
state I d be a winner; said
fii.-nds and neinhl.ors never
cease imploring me my joints to
t-reaRe. and run for justice of
tho peace. :s a beginner. Hut
all such honors I decline; an

ntvir would he feeling fine as
office holder: I'd shrivel up and
wilt awrty. were I in office for
a day: my whiskers would be
turning gray, my trilby colder.
I like to say just what I think,
that this or thai is on tbe blink,
that near beer isn't fit to drink,
that it's punk weather: I like
the freedom to discu-s tbe kai

is no tuple. I'll be bound, above
the larth or underground. Unit
I'm unwillu.g t expound and
niiike it clearer; I start my ar
gument at dawn and lavish
many words thereon, and I'm
still talking on my lawn as night
grows nearer. I do not care
three brindled hoots if I offend
some stray galoots who mix
themselves in these disputes,
they but atp'ise me; I have no
office in. my mind, I have no
stutesmm's ax to grind, so laugh
if they and all their kind de
nounce, abuse me. It Is a bless
ing to be free to talk of every
thing we see w ithout the fear
that v o t e is three may be of
fended: to speak one's thouuhts

across tbe foam, until the span
gKd cows come home it's truly
splendid. Hut when you seek
exalted place, and for an office
make the iac you put a pad
lock on your face, all freedom

hours or so before you say it
