Iticidr-ntal to the ohl liliion home
on West Main street near West
Sixth street now being razed to
make way for a new store build
in'; and bungalow court to he
erected by Mr. H. J. C'onroy, who
purchased the Milton property
some t inte ago. the removal of
that long conspicuous structure,
which the workmen who have
been enuageil in the tearing down
process for the past three days,
have discovered that this old
dwelling, built in 1 v.tT-lI'do, was
exceptionally substantially built,
as shown blts solid timbers and
woikinausl ip both within and with
out. Two of t he work in en expressed
themselves to a reporter passing
by yesterday that it was "a darn
shame to tear down such a -ukm;
build in." One of them insisted
that the news gttt herer )io inside
and see tor him self how suh
stantially the house had been built
of such excellent lumber.
Later, on meeting A. S. Hilton,
toinif-r owner all these years un
til recently, and telling him what
thev said. e leaned buck at his
desk in thn Copcn home office and
said witli some pride. "Of course,
it shows how thev built houses
In those days." Then Mr. Hilton,
who at tho time he built the house
and for years thereafter was ed
itor and publisher ot' the Medford
Mail, one of the predecessor of
the Mail Tribune and later ab
sorbed into the latter publication,
fell to reminiscing h follows:
"1 started to build that linns
without the expenditure of a dol
lar, built it and when it was com
pleted still had not spent a dollar
on it and was free from debt. You
know the valley and county were
full of mills, almost at every creek
crossing in those days, and a num
ber of the mills owed the Med
ford Mail money, which naturally
they paid in lumber. Also car
penters, brick layers, etc., owed
bills to the paper, and there
lore 1 paid nothing for the founda
tion work and carpentry work,
etc.. as the carpenters and other:
exchanged their work tor what
they owed the paper.
"The only thing I had to tmv
nut money for was shingles, but
even then 1 had to pay no direct
money, for 1 owned an acre or so
of land in the outskirts of the cilv.
which I had taken in on a debt
owed and I traded this land for
shingles and carpenter work.
'i was three years hiiiiding this
house in this wav. beginniiH' ft in
1N!i7 and completing it In 1100.
"Oh. by the wav, ihere is an
other interesting tact about that
house. It was the first house in
Medford lo be wired for electric
ity." WASHINGTON. July l!t. 'T1)
