Radio In exercising- a direct
effect in the quality of automo
biles. Some time ago the Packard
Motor Car company developed a
machine, using principles involved
In radio transmission, for the ius
spectlon of piston pin. Now Pack
ard Is using radio equip men t for
measuring the sound of bearings.
Each roller or ball hearing go
ing into a Packard car is run on
n soundless spindle and the noise
It makes while operating is meas
ured. If It exceeds a fixed stand
ard the hearing is rejected.
Tho testing is done in a sound
proof room especially construct
ed for the work. In etffeet the"
action of a radio receiving set Is
reversed. A . loud speaker takes
In the sound and passes It thru
the set. The sound Is amplified
and t )c volume registered on a
dial gauge.
So sensitive Is the device that
a low voiced "ah" uttered in the
farthest corner from the loud
spehker sets up a violent flutter
of the needle -on the gauge.
About a year ago, a local "Thrift";
exhibit originated by .11. C Hrom
ley. advertising manager of The
California. Power Company created!
widespread interest and eoceived (
favorable publicity in several nm-
ional publications. The exhibit was
based upon the thrift of the local '
colony of woodpeckers nnd was.
used In connection with advertising1
Copco Preferred Stock. j
Js'ow, if you happen to pass tho
Copco windows on West Main st. !
you will see another "Thrift" dis
play, also taken from nature. Thisj
time the "buy bee" is used as a;
motif by Mr. Itromley and the ef
fectiveness of the display can rend-!
ily be judged by the crowds of ,
people gathered about the window.
The central figure of tho exhibit
is a big meter box taken from one
of the Copco poles on the East I
Side. This box looked good to a!
locrl colony of bees who selected j
It for a bee-hive, sealed up the j
cracks around the door and pro-J
ceeded to manufacture honey there- !
in. Due to the, fart that the meter1
was no longer In active use theyi
were not disturbed for some time,
and when tho Copco line crew came ,
to salvage this equipment they met j
with some active opposition. j
It was finally found necessary to'
call in the services of a local bee- j
expert who gathered in the colony j
of bees, removed the honey nnd ,
returned the box to the power
company. It may now he seen as.
a part of a Copco Preferred Stock
display in the west window of the)
campany's Home Office liuildlng
here. An appropriately worded
poster In the display states as fol
lows; "A Lesson in Thrift from
Nature. Even the MUisy Hoe? In
vests His Savings in'Crp?o Prop
erties.' t
I The si red paving program of the
; city administration, because of the
nice weather that has been prevail
ing for some time past, is making;
much progress. The paving off
King street was recently completed, j
and tw'o blocks of that throughfarc
beyond Oakdate will be thrown
open for traffic next Thursday.
The paving of Ivy street, which
was on lust week, will be complcti d ,
by next Thursday, and after I
days of drying out will then he
ready for use.
The grading of Hartlett street in
preparation for paving, which is
now under way, will he finished
in 10 days and the excavation work ,
for the paving of Court street will
be begun tomorrow.
