of crime, and spent in jailn-a
lot of time, has told us of his
dark career in pages that com
mand a tear. His book's bees
sold throughout the land, und
for it there la high demand, for
it's a record full of kick, that
makes -detective tales look Kiel:.
The author i.s a gifted man.
who, had he picked the honest
plan, might well have earned
an fco!i"ra name, and portrait
in the Hail of Fame. But in
Ids youth he started wrong;
with criminals he jogged "along,
and learned their tricks and
shared their views, and figured
in police court news. Begin
ning with the minor crimes,
which netted him but meagre
dimes, he rose to criminal re
nown. He worked with skill
and endless pains, j and used
the highest kind of brains. thc
never let bis caution stop, and
yet the law ejiine out on top.
In many jails , he moped -and
pined, and followed tip the con
vict's grind. H suffered every
Ihing, that's known to those
who dwell '(wixl. 'walls of stone;
and when his pr.me had oo'ed
away, and he was growing old
and gray, he lacked the kopecks
that would buy a hot dog or
a piece of pie. And. summing

the Modoc Indians and thrown the

fore. We hastened to put up a
stockade fort for our defense, in

cat o came past our little fort with
about 20 Indian soldiers and stayed
over night with us. Next morning
he moved on toward the scene of
depredations. In his- way over he
came in contact with tho Modoc
murderers, evidently on their way
over to kill us if they could. Cop

the day for its. 1 could make a
long-time story of this but my
space is limited. Suffice to say,
we were forced to stay six months
in our fort, for it waa 40 miles to
the nearest place of real safety,!
and dangerous to leave our fort
