AL SMITH CAN'T
TP HAT a majority of tin; DciiFi.-rnts in Jackson county would
1 ut tlie present time mtlier throw their votes away than vote
for Al Smith in clearly shown hy the primary results in this
lllStlil-t.
With WhIkIi offiic-ully withdrawn und .Senator Heed with no
more chance of the nomination than Aimer Mel'her , the
votes for these two men were not in reality votes for them hut
votes HfiaiiiKt (Jovernor Smith.
In other words, there are (i:i4 Democrats in Jackson county
who are unalterably opposed to Smith, and only 47!) for him,
a majority of 155 in favor of throwing their votes away to
endorsing the hero of the "Sidewalks of New York."
This merely confirms what has been the opinion of most
political observers in this state. No matter who the Keptiljlican
candidate mayhe, Governor Smith can no more carry Oregon
next fall than he can carry the Island of Yap.
It is doubtful, in fact, if Smith can carry more than one
state west of the Kocky mountains. Such a situation, however
iias neen oovious trom the first. The Smith supporters expect
to lose in the West, and in tho South, but they expect to make
up for these losses in the Kast and in the so-called eorn belt.
T'nless the Solid South should actually be broken which is
doubtful, for hundreds of thousands of votes can be lost in this
vast reniori and still leave enough to place the states in the
Democratic column Governor Smith, will. V..w V,.,.b ;,. i.:..
belt, ...an lose the entire West and still ha've a fair chance of
KnininK the November decision.
Yes, as we have frequently remarked before, it is pninjr to
be some "boss race." And the more serious the Itepublicim
problem appears, the more certain .Mr. Hoover is of the nomi
nation. For he is the one available candidate who can be depended
upon to throw n monkey wrench, into the Al ttmith bandwagon,
the one Republican who enn check him in the Kast and Middle
West, where he must be cheeked if the Republican party is
to win.
So while this will be a very exciting campaign, the West will
not be the battleground, ami will not, from a tactical standpoint,
be a factor. Smith will start with the Solid South, Hoover will
xtart with almost ns solid a West ,aml then they will stage their
titanic Htrutfttle in the area from New York City to Denver.
The Republicans should, barring unforeseen complications,
win, but when the votes are counted they will know thev have
oeeii in a battle.

TOM HEENEY
Tom Heeney was rcently
chosen to battle with Tunney,
we learn; Tom's assets have at
wuys been frozen, he uever hail
kopecks to burn. He traveled
with other civilians who
couldn't buy bacon and curb:
anil now he Is dreaming of mil
lions, of money In boxes and
koca. When ThoinaB decided to
t.avel. he rode In no hIiIiiIiik
sedan: he kicked up the dust
and the gravel with feet that
were pleasant to scan: lur they
were so willing and eager they
fairly kicked holes tlirou-ih his
shoes; then Thomas's bundle
was meuKre, and walking was
good for his thews. Then Hee
ney was happy and Jolly, he
hadn't a" woe or a cure, and
avarice itrui-k him as follv,
while he had a shilling to spare.
He hunted the pestilent dlngos
and played with the tall kanga
toos, and talked, In their various
Hugos, with native barbarian
crews. His pleasures were
simple and modest, and humble
his hope und desire: his smile
was the gladdest mid broadest
when camplin alone by his Ire.
Hut now he Is ilreaml.-ig of
money, of money in hogshead
und crate; he merely must con
quer Ciene Tunney, to rise to a
golden estate. You've noticed
his map In the papers, good
nntured and friendly und gay; a
fellow of antics und capers, who
found sume new Joy every day.
Hut If lu u year you behold him.
you'll see Ihul he's careworn
and sad; the plutes of I lie ring
have enrolled him ns one who
is after the scad. True happi
ness goes when tho scheming
for oceans of money begins; it
withers awny when we're dream
ing of rubles in boxes and bins.
Tom Heeney is dreaming of
piling the pleces-of-elght in a
stack: and shortly his gay trick
of smiling will vanish and never
porno back.
