BUSINESS'MURDER TALE OF
BETTER
BUREAU FAVORS
AUCTION MEASURE
The proposed ordinance to reg
ulate future public jewelry auction
sales in Medford, introduced at
Hie special city council meotint;
lust Tuesday night at the request
of some of the local jewelers,
whose attorney, ("has. Keumos.
drew it up. and which is practically
a copy of tt like ordinunce in force
In 1'nrtlund, will comii up for con
sideration at next Tuesday night's
council moetlnt. It carries no
emergency clause, and hence If
passed will not go Into effect for
;:o days.
The ordinance has (he endorse
ment of the Belter Business Bur
eau of the Chamber of Commerce
and the Merchants' association. '
A communication to the mayor
and city council by the Better Busi
ness Bureau, signed by J. D. Rus
sell, chairman, H. b. Strang, Fred
Heath and Win. F. Isaacs reads
aB follows:
"It has come to ' the attention
of the Better Business r.ureau of
tl--o Chamber of Commerce, that
there will be introduced an ord
inance, regulating the Bale of jew
elry at public auctions, and the
bureau has been tisked to express
its opinion on such an ordinance.
"It would appear that Hie ord
inance as drawn, would be a
means of protection to the peo
ple of this city, by regulating the
Importation of stock, other than
the regular Btock of the store, for
the purpose of tho auction, r urth
er. It would prevent misrepresenta
tion of quality, price or genuine
ness of the goods auctioned, by
having each article sold bear a lag
descriptive of that iirtitio, und pro
viding a ponulty for the misrepre
sentation of goods.
"It Is for the purpose of pro
tecting the citizens of this com
munity, as well us the business
mon, through tho controlling of
solicitations, establishment of bet
ter practices, that this better busi
ness bureau is organized, and this
proposed ordinance would come
within I ho scope of tils bureau.
Therefore tho Better Business Bur
eau of the Chamber of Commerce
endorses the above measure anil
recommends it to your considera
tion." 4-
