For a victory for Watson in Indiana would merely he an

of securing- the nomination. As a practical matter, his victory
would he valuable nucrely for trading purposes.
Of course there is an outside chance that Hoover will win.
He has had some newspaper support, there is considerable senti
ment, particularly among the women voters, in favor of defeat
ing Watson and thus repudiating the scandal and corruption
which has marked his political control.
Such an outcome, of course, would simply end the competi
tion as far as the Republican nominee is concerned. In fact, as
Mark Sullivan observed in the Portland Orcgonian yesterday,

traders launched another offensive
on the New York Stock exchange
today and "hears" rushed to cover
as prices soared $2 to nenrly $16
a share. So great was the volume
of trading that the ticker fell
nearly 45 minutes behind the mar
ket by early afternoon. More than
three score individual Issues were
lifted to new peak prices for the
year or longer.
' There were no new develop
ment!! over the week-end to cx-
ninln the tremendous volmo of
buying. The brisk demand for
such high grade Issues as Ameri
can Telephone, International Tele
phone, American Rank Note,
American Can, Canadian Pacific
and Jersey Central, all of which
advanced 3 to 12 points to new
neak price, was widely construed
,as an Indication of a large Invest
