Smudge Smoke
The I-arry Bchada boy arrived j

as I ever did." The youth still
lacks the ripeness of years.

Kids of -city and adjacent terrl-!

forced to march with girls, which
'disgusted them, but they will get
over it. In the Jr. high division,
It -was developed that the com

There was a general smudging
the first of the -week. Things,
however, are not as black as they
looked.

folks today. . '
Hoblas Deuel disgraced himself
Friday by a, batch of . reprehenslblo

better, one would 'think that he
had no bringing . up. We most
certainly would have livened him

linen in range. After his rough-
nocknes had been weighed It
was. not surprising, as a person
who would sell a democrat, like

would do 'anything. The look of
scorn that your corr. gave the up
start, could not have been ex
celled by a mad woman.

WE hear nonsiilprablfi criticism, of Chief Justice Hand of tlie
Stale .Supreme Court for Inking a swinir at Attorney CYo.
W. Joseph in the Salem court roon on Friday, following his
obiter dicta, that Joseph is a liar.
The local criticisms are freiieriti but not identical. Most of
them condemn the Chief Justice for drawing the court room
down to the level of the bar room and prize ring, while others
do not condemn him for taking a swing, but do condemn him for
not landing and sending the fire-eating Portland barrister down
for the count of ten.
Well, there is some basis for the latter contention. If we arc
to have a pugilist for Chief Justice in this state, he should be
a good one. When he starts a right hook, he should be able to
come within it least three feet of finis'hiiig it.
If press reports are correct, however, Chief Justice Hand
merdy fanned the air, several feet from his objective, which so
startled the redoubtable Mr. Joseph, however, that he fell over
his own lawyer.
That doesn't make the Meier-Frank attorney look so good.
A man who can fight as be does with his tongue, ought to lc
able to perform at least as good as a Boy Scout with his fists.
One thing Boy Scouts never do is to fall down before they
are hit. -
So we feel that the professional attentions of Mr. Oenc Tun
ney are sorely needed in the higher circles of the bar and judi
ciary of this state. As long as "trial by battle" has been re
vived here, sanctioned by menrticrs of the Supreme Court and
the Portland bar, there should be some proper preparation for it.
Let Mr. Tunney take Chief Justice Iland and his associates
on the Supreme Bench in hand at once, while Mr. Jack Dempsey
can look after Josaph, Tom Mnmiix and other legal lights of the
state metropolis.
Then, when we have an important trial, we may be assured
of some action worth seeing, instead of such a childishly ama
teurish performance as was put on in the Portland court room
Friday.
Anything worth doing at all, is worth doing well. Come on,
boys. Drop your law books and whereases, and go in for a
little road work each morning, with shadow boxing from three
to four, and bag punching before the curfew rings.

CAPITALIZING ON ROGUE RIVER
Atlempt to Rob Hank
Two unsuccessful burgl'try at
tempts were made last night when
prowlers attempted to cuter Eagle
Point KLate bank and the Davis
transfer office here. Nothing was
taken from either place. Deputy
Sheriff Louis Jennings was called
to the scfino of the Kagle Point
crime to Investigate the situation
this forenoon, but found no clues.
BEFORE local realtors Friday, William Isaacs, well known
Medford merchant, touched on a point that has frequently
been stressed in this column the past few years, namely, the
great asset we have in Rogue River, as a magnet to attract new
residents from, all parts of the country, .
Rogfie River is the center of the finest fishing and the great
est outdoor country left in the United States today. "Without
any advertising and without any special effort being made, a
number of men of wealth have purchased sites along the river,
where they plan to spend several months every year. In every
case large tracts have been purchased, so any sort of congestion
in this outdoor area is rendered improbable.
We agVce with Mr. Isaacs that a more intensive effort,
backed by proper organization, toward attracting sportsmen of
means to this section o Southern Oregon, would bo well worth
the attention of the Realty Board and other civic organizations.
