'In tho manufacture of fireproof
shingles, textiles, insuhttoin, brake!
linings and allied products. De
posits of asbestos, known tech
nically as hydrous silieatciof mag
nesia, are found chiefly In Canada,
although there is one mine in Ari
zona and another in Lake county,
'California.
' The native rock is blasted from
the walls in the open quarry moth
od and after numerous crushing
-and sifting processes Is sent to the
factories to bo made into hundreds
of different products. The crys
tals of the rock ure so small that
'when separated they look like wool
:or cotton fibers. Mr. Illack gave
a striking demonstration of the
Jfiro-resistlng qualities of these
fibers which remain absoluutely
unchunged after exposure to fire,
moisture and the ravages of time.
I Although asbestos was known to
'the ancients, it was not widely used
'Industrially until the twentieth
'century. Ono of tho most Import
'ant uses is In the making 'of fire
proof roofing. The speuker dem
onstrated the application of these
shingles on a miniature roof last
night, allowing how they can be
'laid, over old wooden shingles.
