WASHINGTON, April 13. (VP)
A strong defense of Secretary
Hoover against charges that he
has usurped some of tho powers
of tho agriculture department and
otherwise nan worked to injure
the farmer, was made today by
Secretary Jurdtne.
In a letter dated April 11 und
made public today, the agricul
ture secretary told Charles S.
Wilson, former commissioner of
agriculture of New York state and
now a farmer at Hall, N. V.,
that "iher Ih not the slightest
essence of truth in hese charges
and 1 would resent them If they
were made with honest inten
tions."
Mr. Wilson; under date ',of
Anril 10. had written Jardlno Bay.
tng he had heard tho charge J
mado that Mr. Hoover, as secrc-1
lary of commerce, has encroach-1
ed upon the work of the depart-1
ment of agriculture and In other)
ways has hindered the operation
of your department in tho in
terest of tho farmors."
"It has been my feeling," Wil
son said, "t hat t heso charges
were made for ulterior motives,
but I have come to the conclu
sion that the farmers of New
York stato and of tho country at
large are deserving of a frank
statement from you."
lleplying. Secretary Jardlne wild
that he had "consistently refused
in hi drawn Into a. controversy on I Purine northwest
tho unfounded charges, because
he fully understood the motives
of the small group that has been
responsible for making them.
Under normal circumstances,
ho wrote, "I would not dignify
these- -attacks, hut I have come
to the conclusion that tho farm
ers of this country are entitled
to know tho facts because these
charges seriously reflect upon
the work of this department and
the 20,000 splend'd people who
are listed on its rolls.
"During the throe years In
which I have been secretary of
agriculture I have enjoyed . thp
wholehearted, sympathetic sup
port of Monetary Hoover in all
matters pertaining to tho admin
istration of the department of
agriculture and his actions al
ways have boon In the interest of
the department's work and of the
American farmer. In fact, the
records show that in many in
stances in which tho work of the
two departments was involved, he
was actually partial to tho ue-
partment of agriculture."
