The Valley View Community club
will hold a meeting next week. A
splendid program has been prepared
under the supervision of Mrs. James
Lennox. The club has this year fol
lowed the plan of studying one fruit
at each meeting. Last month the
subject was apples and this next
meeting will be devoted to the pear.
The history of the pear will be
studied, ns well as the uses and ills-
eases of the fruit, methods of spray
ing, etc.
Mrs. William Glenn will give a re
view of "The Ten Commandments."

James Lennox will hove charge of
the refreshments for the evening.

day from a visit to California points.
The high school .debate Jeams
were chosen on Tuesdny night when
the tryout was, held In the high
"hool assembly room at 7:30. Those
chosen for the first team were: Ro
land Parks, Ellen Oaley, Dick Joy.
and Warren Doremus. A 'second
team, consisting of Lorraine Hi-ook-mlller,
Nedra Rartlett, Veda C.ldenn
and Eorl Nutter .was also selected.
Myler Harry will be .the alternnte. In
this debate district the nuestlon to be
debated Is "Resolved, That the Sev
erance Tax Should Be Made a Fea
ture of the System of Taxation in
Oregon." . The. debates for this dis
trict have not" been scheduled, but
will doubtless 1 begin eurly in lhe
year. Ashland HI hns held an en
viable detiate record for the past
iew years and the new teams are
working hard to sustain the record.

many friends of John Smith, gave
him and Ms bride a reception at the
club house. Saturday night, which
begnn at 7:30, with a bounteous
dinner, which consisted of roast
chicken' nnd dressing, mashed pota
toes, salads, pickles, pie, cake, bread
nnd butter and coffee. Plates were
laid for about sixty. After dinner
a miscellaneous shower was" given
the bride and gYoom, and in this
shower was included Mr. and Mrs.
llnlph nusen berry, who were mar
ried last summer, but on account of
leaving here at once were not
accorded the uunl Bhower, and, this
was given" as a complete surprise
to them. Roth couples received muny
beautiful, as well as useful gifts. The
remainder of the evening was spent
in dancing until the wee sma hours,
when all wended their ways home,
voting it as one of the most pleas
ant events of the season and wish
ing all the newlyweds a long and
happy life. !
