OF LOST CYCLOPS
NORFOLK. Va., Pec. (A.P.)
The naval collier Orion, caught In a
hurricane off the Virginia Capes
Wednesday night barely escaped a
disaster which may throw important
light on the loss of the ill-fated Cy
clops, a vessel of almost identical
type.
Wrenched by the tremendous seas
as she attempted to round Cape Henry
after leaving here Wednesday after
noon for M-elvllle. It. I., with II, BOO
tons of coal, the collier is believed to
have been saved from breaking In two
only by the swift decision of her
skipper to put back to port.
Kven though closer" bulkheads gave
the Orion slightly greater strength In
her longitudinal bracing than the Cy
clops, her frames amtdsblp are known
to have buckled and twisted In the
Htorm and nho was leaking badly to
day as she lay at a dock In the navy
yard hero.
The better longitudinal bnyhiff was
the only difference In the two ships
and the study which tho naval au
thorities will make of the storm's ef
fect on the Orion may throw consid
erable light on the fale of the Cyclops,
which has remained a sen mystery
since her disappearance In March,
1018.
Many marine authorities have held
to the opinion that the Cyclops which
was loaded with manganese, and car
ried f7 passengers , twenty officers
und m crew of 213, broke In two and
went down before she could even flash
a radio signal. The theory that she
might have fallen thn victim of a
German submarine was denied by the
German authorities. She was last re
ported at ItarhadocH In the British
West Indies where alio put In for
bunker coal.
