Clancy, who attended the last days
of Mrs. Klla Murphy, were the prin
cipal witnesses this morning, in the
trial of her husband, Omar W. Mur
phy, well-known local resident,
charged with manslaughter. The
Htate contends that Mrs. Murphy's
death was due to alleged heating at
tho hands of the defendant, after n
lingering .illness. The defense con
tends that there was no beating, but
"a spanking," and that death wan
duo to other couhcs. The testimony
of phyk'iaiiH dwelt principally with
the health of deceased, bruises upon
tho body, and conditions of vital or
gans, as a result of tests made hy
a i'ortland laboratory.
Mrs. Murphy died several weeks
after tho alleged assault, ' and the
defense, represented by ; Attorney
Ccorge ' M. Roberts attempted to
Kbow, on cross-examination, that tho
exact causes of death had never been
determined.
