The widow pf the former cmituiu of

Captain Foley repented to tho naval

Captain Foley said that only a
single typewritten copy of the state

personal to iMrs. ' Lansdowne," and
that for the 'same reason the notes
from which the statoment wns typed

The Shenand6ah court of Inquiry to

It listened jto a statement by Men

senior surviving officer pf the wrecked
dirigible, denouncing as a slander of
the dead any Insinuation that Com
mander Lansdowne took the Shenan

weather. (
The statement of Rosenduhl placed
unexpectedly ibefore the court Just us
ft was preparing to adjourn, sustained
until the end the nervous tension that I
has gripped court and spectutins since I
the hearing began Tuesduy morning.
A moment before Foley hud left the
witness stand' with the statement thut
his whole attitude toward Mrs. Utns
downe as prospective witness hud
been that of an ''honorable man" who
supposed at i the time that he was
dealing with "au honorable woman."
Hosendnhl (hen told the court that !
"In the Interest of Justice it should
pormlt him t6 speak beforo it retired
to consider the question beforo it."
Jie was Impelled to speak, he suld, by
Insinuations .that Commander Uins
downe took the Shennndoah out de
spite his own belief tbnt weather con
ditions would Jeopardize her safety.
He ' declared I such a suggestion not
only "reaches the height of absurdity,
but slanders the dead," I
"I huve made this statement for the'
sake of fair 'Play," he said, "so that
the undispiitsble facts may enjoy a i
just domination over any laissihle i
funded, perverted or prejudicial var
iations thereof."
