TJic map is utlvcrtisi'd as the official reprcsfiitalion .of "inter
state highways, selected and numbered by the joint board of inter
state highways, October Hist, 11)25."
It is, therefore, somewhat of a shock to find that, as far as this
guide to highway information is concerned, Me?ll'nrd does not exist,
nor has Crater Lake yet been discovered ! '
Southern Oregon, it seems, consists of Rnscliur, Cirants Pass,
Ashland, Cape Blanco, a place on the coast called Empire, and
Klamath Lake in the lower right-hand corner.
V. M. Jardine, .Secretary of Agriculture, has his name on the
left hand upper corner, which deepens the mystery somewhat, for
His Excellency visited Medford only n few months ago, was given a
motor trip through the valley and a luncheon at Camp Jackson, so
lie must know there is such a place and that Crater Lake is not
far away.
The mystery, no doubt, will be explained by some reference to
the fact that this is n highway map and not a tourist map, but
the obvious' answer to this is, the alibi only makes such an over
sight the less cxcuseitble.
For a highway map that shows Southern Oregon, without Med
ford and tho road to Crater Lake, is not a highway map. Crater
Lake, at least, is one of the main highway attractions on the Pa
cific Coast.
One might understand eliminating everything but the highways,
but if there was room in southern Oregon for Klamath Lakei and
Umpire,. there was certainly room for Medford and Crater Lake.
This is not the first time Medford has been left off important
highway and nutomohilc maps. We don t believe lor a moment, me

It might be well, therefore, for
merce to investigate the matter and sec that the maps of the future
ar.o brought up to date and the ante-bellum "lay-outs" are destroyed.

ARTICLE No. 30
One of the charms of auction is the
peculiar fact that interesting hands
have a habit of coming up nt the most
unexpected moments. You will be play
ing along for hours nnd only normal
hands will be dealt and then a puzzling
hand will come up, one that invites dis
cussion and a more or less wide differ
ence of opinion. Auction players every
where love to talk over hands and the
so-called "post-mortem" is as much a
part of the game as the play and bid
ding itself. The "unexpected" is really
auction's greatest charm and because
of the infinite number of hands possible,
this unexpected element always will be
present. '
It really is remarkable that good
players, even in the same group or club,
differ so radically in their theory of bid
- ding. Such is the case, however, and it
is really a tribute te. the greatness of
auction as a game. The individual ele
ment has so far prevailed and as long
as it does auction will retain its popu
larity. To really enjoy a game or com
petition, of any kind the player likes to
feel that he is as good as the next one,
that he has .an even chance, nnd auction
certainly offers that attraction.

In this hand spades were trumps and Z was in the lead. How can he play the

should now lead the king of clubs. If B
trumps with a low spade, Z will over

YZ are bound to win three more tricks.

bid of three diamonds is questionable.
After Z's rcbid of spades, Y, should
figure that his singleton kin is a val

chance for game in spades than in dia
monds. After his bid of three diap. ,nds,
however, Z should not hesitate to bid
