A shake-up of thn county librarv
system is predicted by tho Ashland
Tidings in the following news item
of interest to tho Medford patrons
of tho public library, as well us to
rural users of library books through
out Jackson county:
"Starling January 1, 1926, no book
borrowers at the Ashland city li
brary will be allowed the privilege
of borrowing books unless they, are
residents, within .the city limits of
Ashland, It was announced this
morning by Miss Blanche Hicks, li
brarian. "'WiIh action will cause more than
400 out of city borrowers, who have
been accommodated at the local li
brary for several years, to he without
a ready Source of book borrowing
and it is believed,, will cause a shake
up in ttie county library system.
"At the present time, the library
at Medford is the county library,
and all residents of the county, with
the exception of the people of Ash
land, are supposed to be served by
the Mud ford b 4Vrary. Funds. rom
the county treasury are paid to, the
Medford library for the accommoda-
j tlon of these out of city borrowors,
"The "Ashland library, however,
has been accommodating tho out-of-
city borrowers in tho southern end
of tho county for several years. This
was done because of the distance
these rural borrowers would have
had to truvel to obtain books from
the Modford library, and wus an ac
commodation for both tho library ut
Medford and the rural borrowers.
'Tor this service, tho Ashland h
hrnry has never received nny funds,
and tho directors of the city library
have finally decided that it is un
fair to tho city borrowers to allow
tho country people, who should he
borrowing books from the library at
Modford the use of the city library
for which they, through tho county,
are contributing nothing.
"Ashland has never been Included
in th.o county library system. When
the system was first inaugurated.
Jackson county was the only county
in the state containing two libraries,
with on nt Ashland nnd another
at Medford. Tho Medford llbrnry
was designated as tho county library,
but nftor a hard fight, Ashland suc
ceeded in maintaining her own li
brary Independent of the county li
brary, and for which no funds are
appropriated by the county.
