PUT AT $90,596,
LEVY IS REDUCED
! Am (he situation now stands tho
'budget for the city of Medford's ex
penses for next year will be $90,f!Mj,
I and good news for the taxpayers Is
jtlmt the levy foi- this sum, $17.7 mills,
will be one-half mill lews than last
year's, levy, which was H.2. This levy
for next year's general city expenses
Includes interest on all bonds.
The budget was decided on last
night ut a mewing of the citizens
budget committee, with the city coun
cil, during which the budget, as pre
pared by the city officials, was ap
proved by the committee, in general.
The only important change made by
the committee was In Increasing the
fund for paving repairs from $2500 to
I&OO0. as It was thought to be a wise
policy to keep tho street paving In
good condition. If this Increase had
not been made the total levy for next
year would have lieen one mill less,
Instead of a half mill less.
The final meeting prior to the pas
sage of the budget ordinance will be
held Nov. 30. and it Is improbable
that any changes will be made at that
time.
The citizens budget committee con

The largcHt Increase In the budget
of any of the city departments Is one

of Increased snkujes to the firemen.
The fire chief is ruined from $130 to

increased $10 to 1'0 per month each
The firemen have always been better
paid Than the policemen, and under
the new budget will draw from ?15 to

The budget allows SfiuO for summer
band concerts, the same as last year,
and JtjUU for the K'd Cross.

WASHINfiTON, Nov. 7. ( A. I'.)
I'taetlcally united support both In the

most unprecedented prospect Is now
confidently expected by house leaders.
Wlih virtually all of the vital and

Chairman (Ireen said today that a

For the first lime since tho war, re

OF SIXTH STREET
.Mayor Ah'mh'ifrr bus Just received
a letter from the Oregon Insurance
ItatiiiK Bureau, James AI. .Mcl'uue,
manager, which states In poHitive
terms that unless tho-city of Medford
opens a new crossing over tho South
ern Tueiflc tracks. In addition to the
present .Main strict cross! ug, that
bureau will increase the Insurance
rates on all property In tho city west
of the railroad tracks.
Air, .McCune'H letter does not stipu
late any time limit, In making this
threat, which fact causes Home specu
lation as to whether a new crossing
must be provided In u month, six
months or year. Nor does it state
where a new crossing should he estab
lished. This letter Is Interesting In view of
the faet that recently the Southern
Pacific railroad management Jn con
ference with the city officials agreed
to permit the cUy to establish the
long talked of crossing over Sixth
street only July 1st next, after the
Natron cut-off Is In opertaion.
W'hilo the railroad officials have
not so stated, It Is generally under
stood hero that the change of heart
of the railroad in permitting this new
crossing to be established in this
location, which , proposition It had
always fought heretofore, Is that
when the Natron cutoff Is operated
all freight trains, either north or
south bound, except local freights,
will not pass through Mod ford, but
will be routed on the Natron cutoff.
The city officials presume that
when the Insurance rating bureau Is
Informed that the Sixth street cross
ing will be established shortly after
July 1 , that bureau will be satisfied
and not put Into effect the threatened
rais In rates for the west side.

Invest Helpfully
' As between two investments, both equally safe, every man is

Money invested with our institution is loaned out for home build
