I'residcnt Coolidgc recently endorsed a retention of the present
tariff schedules, and strange to relate the Democrat refused to
sanction rt revision of the tariff downward. Southern democrats
it seems are strong for protect ion. Florida, once the stronghold of
Republican opposition, is now more interested in the protection and
conservation of wealth than New York and Pennsylvania.
One might expect the Democrats to rise en masso against tho
exclusion of Countess Karolyi from the United States, by Secretary
of State Kellogg. But thus far not a word of protest lias come
from the Democratic ranks. Senator I to rah has thus far been almost
the lead in opposition to the policies of the war and navy depart-
party.
Kyen in the airplane controversy" there has, to date, been no
parly division, although this may materialize when congress opens.
Senator Bingham of (.'oniu'cticiil, a Kepuhlicau, has thus far taken
the lead in oppositio nto the policies of the war anil navy depart
ments. In sliort, as far as surface indications go, the Democratic oppo
sition has ceased to exisl. With Bryan gone, and willi Al Smith
through -with his Now York campaign, one might say the Demo
cratic party has vanished.
This conifitiou, of course, is too good, or too bad, to continue,
indefinitely. The worm has always turned sooner or later in the
past and eventually it must turn this time.
Eventually, however,' is a big word. And at the present moment
there appears to be no good reason for challenging the Republican
prediction that President Coolidgc will remain at. the While House
until he decides he wants to leave probably on or about the 4th
of March, 1033. ; ; '

they're wringing, they are mourning in the midnight, thev
are weeping all the day; at the dismal wailing places we behold
their tear wet fiiees. they are moaning, they are sighing for the
money thrown away. Ilivary are the old man's ravings; he
has handed all his savings to a I'nker who has promised great
ami opulent returns; anil his little roll's departed with that
faker stony-hearted, anil his ancient heart is broken as the
ghastly truth he learns. There are sad-eyed widows weeping
for the coin they had in keeping, much desired insurance money,
gathered when their husbands died; anil the fakers blithe came
tying, with their gall anil nerve undying, ami they got the
widows' rubles, smooth of tongue but viiltuie-cy'ed. Now the
statistician hollers, " Kvery year two billion dollars are expended
by the people on the dizziest of frauds; never docs the faker fal

ARTICLE No. 24
Some time ago the writer heard of
the dummy playing the hand, instead of
the declarer, and that the mistake wha
not discovered until the completion of
the fourth1 trirk. An even more aston
ibhimj error has.jut been brought to the
writer's attention. 2 dealt and bid one
diamond, A bid two cluba and all
passed. For some unknown reason, A
got it into his head that Z had obtained
the final bid so led to the first trick.
What is still more remarkable, the other
players didn't notice the error and Z
proceeded to play the hand and with
clubs as trumps. At the completion of
the sixth trick, one of the players real
ized what had happened and called at- .
tention to the error. The case was re-.,
ferred by telephone to a member of the
card committee of a well-known club.
This player was- noted for his sense of
humor and ruled that Z must continue
to play the hand, but that for the re
maining seven tricks, "diamonds" must
be trumps. Truly a most remarkable
situation and a truly humorous solution.
The trick bidder is with usonce again
and this time the trick bid proved a
costly experiment:
Hearts -r 6, 2
Clubs 'A, 3 '

passed. Z bid two hearts, A and Y passed
Had B bid two no-trump. Z and A
paired and Y now decided that it was
a good lime for a trick bid. He figured
that if he bid three hearts, bis op
ponents would probably pass and that
f:ame would be impossible. On the other
land, if he bid three clubs, he would
probably get doubled, and then il" he
bid three hearts, his opponents would
also double. that and thus give him
game if he ihade the ibid. For thos;;
reason?, 'he bid three clubs and sure
enough, B doubled. 2 now got scary
and bid three diamonds which A doub
led. Y now had the chance he had
planned for feo bid three hearts. B doub
led three hearts and all passed. A had
the opening lead and here's where the
trick bid acted as a boomerang for A
decided that he would lead the ace of
clubs because of his partner's double
of three c!u'". His natural opening ir
respectiveof the three clubs' double was
the ace of spades so that the only effect
of Y's trick bid was to indicate to his
opponents the only lead that would de
feat the three heart bid. The club lead
defeats the bid one trick while the
spade lead enables the declarer to Bet
up the spade suit and just make his. .
contract. Y's trick bid was very foxy
but didn't produce the results expected. : . ,,
The play of the hand is usually more
interesting than the bidding and the.
player who can obtain the maximum
mi miter- of tricks is the one most ad
mired. As a matter of fact the bidding;
is much more important than the play
but the latter is more showy and there
lore more admired.
One of the surest'ways to win tricks .
is by forcing discards. Your opponents .
have to guess which card to let go and .
as usual with guesses, they guess wrong ".
more often than right. On some hands,
however, it is possible to force discards
in such a way that the opponents have
no defense. When such a play is possi
ble an opponent is said to be "squeezed," .
that is, forced to discard winning cards.
Good players are always on the look-,
out for the "squeeze" play and are well i
pleased when they get a chance to work
it. In the following problem, Z had-a
chance to "squeeze" both A and B on
the discard.
