NEW 'CAVES' ROAD
ARE POINTED OUT
llepreaentntlves of all parts of
Jackson and Josephine counties are
expected to attend the state hlKhway
commission's hearing on the Siskiyou
highway Improvement district to be
held at Jacksonville Friday. October
30. There the advantages of having
a road from Williams creek to Oregon,
caves will be' cited to the commission.
Facts of Interest will bo brought out.
"If this nine mile o.id is built," de
clares Secretary Boyl of the Chamber
of Commerce, "where now there is
nothing more than a mountain trail,
lirants Pass as well as .Med ford will
be benefited, it la claimed. The for
mer ' city will .be "approximately 33
mlleR closer to the caves, and ut the
Rame- time residents of the southorn
end of the valley will have no need
of traversing 86 miles of state high
way, to reach the scenic wonder.
Forty miles will be saved by the road
to the cayes and 20 miles to Crescent
City. ' - -
"When this road ' Is completed.
If It should bo, tourists as well im local
motorists will bo given the joys of a
loop "trip." Ily going to the caves by
t he Medford and Jacksonville route
the "motorist will be enabled to leave
by way of Grants Pass, or vice versa.
Autolsts en route from Crescent City
will have the opportunity of going to
the caves without retracking back on
the Redwood highway, leading from
Ihat city to tirants Pass, They may
then have the choice of going to
Grants Pbbs by way of Murphy or
coming to the southern end of the
valley by way of Applegate.
"On the southern end of tills pro
posed road, pavement has been laid
from Medford to Jacksonville and
several miles toward Kucli, affording
fine travel. From Ruch to Williams
creek the road is said to be in very
good condition and with the proposed
road-building from Williams creek to
the caves, the motorist will be af
forded an enjoyable trip.
"Another factor to be considered is
the ranchers living in the districts
where a mountain trail is the only
means of ' transportation. These
ranchers, ds n matter of fact, are moro
or less at a disadvantage without the
road, and realizing tho situation, are
very -much in favor of the proposed
building or the 'nine-mile stretch.
"The Indebtedness caused by the
road building will be paid, on the
greater part, by Jackson county, only
a small Krtion of Josephine county
being included in the bonded district.
The city of Medford will be the only
cunty city Included in this district,
which includes the northwestern por
tion of the county in the Applegate
and Williams creek sections. .The
. Jackson county district has. an-asBess-.
ed valuation of approximately ten
million dollars in comparison to a
figure much smaller in the Josephine
district.'
The Medford Chamber of Commerce,
which originated the petition for I lie
Siskiyou highway Improvement dis
trict, wlU., represent this city nt the
hearing. ' ,
