his typically American career. Jiut he never faiucd political advan
tage 1y the conventional tricks of the politician. His strength
lay not in his ability to i'liiu-flam the people, but in his ability
to understand them. ,
Only those on the inside at the democratic convention in
1024 know how near the Indiana senator came to being tho demo
cratic nominee. At any time after the Smith-McAdoo deadlock
he could have had the nomination without the asking. All the
cards were set for his triumphal entry. Had he not absolutely
refused to consider it, and formally announced that if nominated
l.c would decline to run, he, instead of Davis, would have heuded
the democratic ticket.
Ifis refusal was an example of. his political shrewdness. He
knew what most of his supporters failed to !rilsP, namely, that
nothing . could prevent a Republican victory. Ife could limloubt

III.W'K met the famed and mighty, men -of wisdom mid of
sense, and I never found them flighty with u vanity intense.
They were simple in their manners, they were ipiiet, often shy,
and they waved no gaudy banners to impress the passing guy.
"We're just folks," their whole demeanor seemed to say, in
modest tunes, and they called for kraut and wiener just like
Smith or lirown or Jones, "We're just folks, we grieve or
frolic like tho unknown passerby, and at night we have the
eolie if we've eaten loo much pie. We have made some small
successes since the day when we were born, but the best of us
confesses that he has an aching corn. We are told we inay
havo places in the nation's hall of fame, but we've pimples; on
our faces and the gout has made us lame. AVo are only common
mortals, we have sorrow, hope and gloom, walking sadly to the
portals of the pride-effacing tomb." I have seen the selling
philer, 1 have seen him at his den, and he fancied he was greater
than the common run of men. He had gathered transient glory
that would fir.le in a day, and he thought in song and story ho
would shine and throb ulway. And his bearing was so regal,

Tho professor "cured himself," und'your present position, what asylum
then, orofoaaor like, concocted a
whale of a testimonial. I1K testl -
monlal, however, is different from
tho usual line of such fiction perpe
trated by absent
minded professors
and credulous cler
gymen. ; There Is no
catch tu it; that Is
to suy, nobody ex
cept maybe your
self will profit If
you are persuaded
by the testimonial
to try the treat
ment mentioned.
Testimonials In general, I believe,
should be read Tor amusement only;
they aro excellent humor, provided
you are not too gullible. Symptom
hounds should leave testimonials
Htrictly alone; they'll find ' richer
pickings In quack doctor books or
pamphlets for prospects. Tho pro
fessor's treatment well, you may
take It or leave it, and almost every
body will leave it If the court knows
herself, and she think she do. j
In order to break this as gently
as possible, t would now reveal that
the professor published his - testi
monial In a book entitled "Physio
logical Economy ftf Nutrition," 20
years- ago, and he is one of the really
big guns in the scientific world, a
doctor '-of 'philosophy, a doctor of
law,-, a doctor of science and of
pretty nearly everything else that
may honestly grant thiH honorable
title, except divinity and medicine,
Professor Chittenden Is no preacher,
nor yet a physician. Had he been
a D. D., along with all his other
degrees, ho might still have perpe
t rated this testimonial, ministers fall
all over each other in their eagerness
to write testimonials. Had he been
an M. D. ho would probably have
refrained from naming the com
plaints of which he was cured, at
any rate. Yes, I know plenty of
physicians have disgraced their call
ing by giving their names to testi
monials, but not men of education
and good standing in the profession.
Professor Chittendon, when still a
young man, suffered considerably, It
seems, from "sick headaches" and
"bilious attacks," if anybody knows
what those terms mean, and, worse
still, . obstinate "rheumatism" In his
knee; He was one of the strongest
supporters of the low protein diet.
He decided to try some of his own
medicine, not only as a general ex
periment In nutrition, but to see
whether It would benefit, his heath.
Accordingly, he adopted 'a regimen or
diet in which not only protein, but
all the other essential food elements
were restricted to rather smaller
amounts than is generally ' deemed
necessary for a maintenance diet.
He practiced economy with tho cal
ories, all right.
In tho course of eight months of
this economical rationing tho pro
fessor lost about 15 pounds of body
weight, and thereafter for as many
more months his weight remained
stationary. He spent two months of
the time on a fishing excursion, fre
quently rowing from six to 10 miles
in a . forenoon, sometimes ngainst
head winds, and without breakfast
his is the painful part of the
treatment, eh, fellers? without
breakfast, gosh, ; without even a cup
of coffee, it sounds cruel and ho
enjoyed great freodom from fatigue
and muscular soreness than In pre
vious years when ho was taking the
usual diet.
rofessor Chittenden wrote that
this treatment cured his "rhuma
tlsni'' and practically put an end
tn his "sick headaches" and "bilious
attacks." I believe every word of
his testimonial. I commend tho Chit
tenden treatment to every overfed,
uuttiiiitoxlcated, . balloon tired, lazy,
hnlf tillve son of a gun that reads
this column.
On rending over what I have just

; ARTICLE No. 4
Is it more difficult to play the dummy
hand against two opponents or for the
two opponents to play against the de
clarer? That question has been the
cause of much discussion but to the
writer there seems only one answer. It
is much more difficult for the opponent!,
of the declarer. The latter can see his
twenty-six cards and should know the
best way of combining them to the best
advantaue. He is not in the dark as are
his opponents, for they must guess as
to the other's holding and they are just
as apt to guess wrong as right. Also, in
the opening lead, the opponents of the
declarer are at a disadvantage. If part
ner has not bid, what should be the
opening lead? This is a question that
puzzles the experts at times but the
average player can greatly overcome
this difficulty by the careful study of a
good table of leads. In playing against
the declarer;' try to convey as much
information as possible to your partner
by use of conventional leads and dis
cards. Watch your partner's play and
that of the declarer very closely. Try
not only to make every play of your
own convey information to your part
ner, but try also to learn something

would have started an echo to show his

indicated a singleton. Z, therefore, fig
ured that the clubs were divided 5-4-3-1.
He holds five spades and his dummy

it must be in spades. Therefore the

The following hand looks easy but
unless the proper lead ia made, the
game is lost:
Hearts Q, J, 8
Clubs 7,4, 2
Diamonds K, 10, 7, 4, 2
Spades J, 4 v
The dealer bid one spade and alt passed.
What is the correct opening lead with
the above hand? The correct lead is the
queen of hearts. Any other lead with
this hand would have lost game. The
player who held it opened the four of
diamonds, a very bad lead. Never open
a suit containing the king against a suit
bid, if there is any other possible lead.
It is nearly always a trick loser.
The writer has occasionally mentioned
the Law of Symmetry in these articles.
This Law is, in effect, a theory that
there is a symmetrical relation existing
between the distribution of 'th four
suits in any one of the hands and the
distribution of any one of the four suits
among the four hands. This symmetri
cal relation is well exemplified by the
distribution of the following hand which
came up recently in actual play:
J, 7,4
A, 8, 7, 6, 2
a, 4, J
Hearts K, 10,7,5,3
Clubs 2
Diamonds K, 10, 3
Spades J, 9, 8, 2
the dummy also Indicated a possibility
that these suits were divided 5-4-3-1.
Z, therefore, decided to play according
ly. At the second trick he led the ace of
heart? tkI then a low heart trumping
in dummy. He then led a low dub
which B trumped. On this trick Z
played his ace of clubs so that he could
finesse the king jack later. No matter
what B now plays Z must make a small
slam. Figure it out. The hand is remark
able in that after the first lead the dis
tribution of all four suits can be so'
accurately determined. It is also a re
markable illustration of the Law of
Symmetry. All of the four suits and all
of the four hands have the same dis
tribution, 5-4-3-1. It is the first time
that the writer ever has noted such
unique hand.

good. If A discards a spade, both of Z's
spades will be good. Any of the three
discards, therefore, will lay A's hand
open to a loss of a trick. Suppose he dis
cards a heart, Y plays the queen and
then plays the five of spades. Z wins
the triclc and leads the nine of hearts.
What can A now discard but a spade
or a diamond? If the former, Z's spade
is good; if the latter, Y's diamonds are
good so that YZ must win the balance
of the tricks.
