with approximately 5110 ministers anil
laymen in attendance. Examinations
rf undergraduate members wero Imlil
Monrtuy and yesterday with the wel
coming service last evening.
"Preaching Jesus Christ is the chief
mission of a minister of the gospel,"
was the message brought by liev.
Melville T. Wire of Astoria. In his ud.
dress of response at the opening meet
Ini!. "We ought all to serve our com
munities, but when ministers become
merely handy men about town the
ch'ef reason for their work Is lost." be
said.
Robert A. ftooth of Eugene gave the
address of welcome. "We have stand
ard schools, standard lumber scales,
which makes it impossible for prod
ucts to pass muster if they are not un
to standard; we have standard food
land standards for everything we use
or do," he said. "Is it possible that
In the universe, which was crented In
the Image of God. there is no standard
of life? The mission of Jesus Christ
. wns to standardize human action."
The purpose of religion, he declared.
Is to bring people to a right relation
to each other. The change In human
relations, necessary to bring about a
harmony and Joy, cannot be accom
plished by argument or dsnuts over
the- Interpretations of the acts of
Jesus Christ, he said.
Dishop William O. Shepard of Port
land was praised by Booth, who de
clared that there have been manv out
standing bishops since the Oregon
conference was organized, but none
as outstanding as Bishop Shepard.
The ministers of the conference
Were also commended for their work.
