ON LOCAL FRUITS
"Fruit from the Itogue Itlver Valley
should not be allowed to go out with
out some form of wording on the la
bel to Inform the purchaser that this
fruit is from the Itogue Itlver valley,"
says the Grants Pass Courier. "The
other day several carloads of fruit
were sent out with merely the word
'Oregon' In one corner. Of course it's
good to have that much displayed,
but Oregon is a large state. This fruit
might be from any one of many sec
tions The purchaser Knows merely
that it Is Oregon fruit.jind no more.
"Itogue itlver Valley fruit Is famed
the world over. Its pears biing the
highest prices in foreign markets and
Its apples are sought in many coun
tries. Why then should not the name
of tho producing section appear on
the boxes? The large concerns hand
ling the produce of the Itogue Valley
rhould be notified thai the shippers
want the labels to include "Itogue
Itlver" on them. It would be no more
than a recognition of a superior qual
ity product."
Oregon has only ono poisonous
snake, tho rattler. H can be distin
guished cosily because It has a blunt
head. All tho other snakes, nil of
which aro non-venomous, have point
ed heads.
Acordlng to Prof. Tex T. Schubach,
curator of the California snake arm,
of iierkeley, Calif., who makes these
statements. If the snakes other than
the rattler were encouraged, they soon
would kill most of tho earwigs. Thoy
also would destroy a great quuntity of
tho other troublesonio bugs.
Many of Oregon's rattlesnakes ac
cording to Schnbach, are the master
suggers, a particularly deadly variety.
On a noo day trip between Ashland
and Klamath Falls recently, the snake
man caught' 40 master soggers.
die had been bitten eight timesby
rattlers. His prescription for surviv
ing such bites Is as follows: Tie a
cord or rubber tightly above tho bile.
When the blood Is shut off, cut a gash
about an Inch long through the
wound with a sharp knife or razor
blade. Suck out tho wound If your
mouth Is free of abrasions, decayed
teeth and sores. Wash the wound
"with permanganate of potash solution
of a wine color. When this is done,
remove the cord and take a laxative,
along with ono sixtieth of a grnln of
strychnine. Keep wet antiseptic dress
ings on tho wound.
Whiskey, - by Increasing tho heart
circulation, makes tho spread of the
poison more rapid. Rnttlers strike
without colling at times, but they can
not strike effectively more than three!
fourths of their length. A 6 months
old snake may have four rattles; they
do not grow one a year. A horsehair
rope around a camp bed will not keep
the snake out. New fangs are grown
within 48 hours. A baby rattler Is as
poisonous a an old one.

To the ESKIMOS HIBERNATE
SIX MONTHS of the YEAR?
HERODOTUS, the ancient
geographer and historian,
thought so. We moderns
know better, but some of us are
Btill superstitious. For example,
why do some people still believe
that there is something myster
iously "better" about "eastern"
motor oils merely because they
cost more and are made in the
East?
1t . Oil Superstition Fast
Losing Qround
Zerolene costs less because it's
made in tho West but that
doesn't make h better; it's better
because in practice it actually
lubricates better. That's why
Zerolene is successfully lubricat
ing more cars in the Pacific Coast
states high priced and low than
any other oil made.
Zerolene will increase the gas
oline mileage, reduce the carbon
removal operations and mainten
ance costs and lengthen the life
of any car in which it is used.
Made from Selected
blaphthenic Crude
Zerolene will do the same for
your car. It is made from selected
western naphthenic base crude
Insist on Zerolene
even if
it does cost less
(the best crude so far discovered
for the manufacture of motor lub
ricants) by our high-vacuum proo
ess, checked IS times for quality,
and specially filtered through 40
tons of Florida Fuller's Earth to
give you an oil that's absolutely
pure and safe.
Why pay tribute to a supersti
tion? Insist on Zerolene. Always
ask for ZEROLENE by name.
Qct the Facts!
A series of independent and im
partial reports showing the experi
ence cf large users with Zerolene
motor oil has been collected in our
booklet, "Why Pay Tribute to r
Superstition?" Ask any Standard
Oil Company representative or
Zerolene dealer for a copy.
