The city of Gold Hill has commenced
the reconstruction of Its present
water system all over tho city with
the recent water bond issue of $15,000
for that purpose. The present main
system wus installed in 1 Still and has
long ugo been inadequate to supply
the nutural growth of the city In the
outlying districts. The construction
work Is under tho immedlatu charge
of C. W. Martin, superintendent of
the locut cement plant and advisory
engineer for the city.
The reconstruction of tho water
system will Include the re-lnhnblting
of the city 600 h. p. hydro-electiical
power plant on Rogue river within
the city limits for the city's use for
street lighting and power purposes.
This power plant, purchased by tho
city two years ago from the Gold Hill
Klectrlo Power company has been
Idle for several years, but is ln good
condition except the water wheel pits
Which nre being rebuilt wholly now ln
concrete. The water wheel pits used
by the city for several years in driv
ing the pumping plant direct aro in a
good state of preservation and Is
auxiliary to the water wheels driving
the hydro-electrical power equipment
and will be preserved as auxiliary
and reserve power. An 8x10 triplex
Gould pump is being Installed with
the present pumping equipment as a
reserve duirng the Irrigation season
and fire protection, while the reser
voir with a head of 235 feet above
the main portion of the city is ample
with twice the present population of
tho city.
The power ond diversion site on
Rogue river purchased from the
power company by the city Included '
120 acres extending for a mile on the I
west side of the river and has since
been tuken Into the city limits nnd
platted as Water Park Addition.
About twenty acres of this tract be
low the power plant has been set
aside to the local smelter company ,
for smelter, saw mill, quartz mill, i
and otber by-products plant, and
railroad switching site, while the bal- '
nnce of the tract is being retained as
a canal ami diversion, power and
park site by the city, excepting ad
joining the main highway leading to
Sams Valley and designated as Sams .
Valley avenue, which is being re-'
served for home slto and sold by the
city and for that purpose only. ' :
That portion of Water Park Addl-'
tion extending on tho mountain west
of the river contains valuable deposits
of gold, copper nnd iron oro, has
been leased to the local smelter by
the city for 25 years oh a royalty
basis for mining purposes. These
ores are ideal ores to mix with the
refractory ores of southern Oregon
nnd will be used quite extensively by
the smelter company and besides the
city will receive much revenue from
the mineral vafues.' j
Tt is reported that there Is a move- 1
ment on foot to organise a local com-
pany by several of the mine owners '
and local manufacturing plants to
take over tho city's power plant by a
long term lease or purchase for their
exclusive use, and in that event tho
power will developed to several thou
sand h. p. from the present equip
ment of 500 h. p.' The city holds
water rights from the state which
have a potential power of 6000 h. p.
with additional dam on the present
diversion works.'

ions circles of the communities.
