their hair bobbed. For many wncks
there has been five, with unshorn
tresses, but Monday, one weakened
and now there are four. The ranks
are expected to be further depleted,

Joe Langetl, for 27 years a riilner
In those parts, Is sinking a shaft for
gold on a vacant tot on California
street, Jacksonville, and Tuesday
afternoon panned out between $8 and
$10 of tho yellow metal at one wash
ing. It was the opinion oT the 14
spectators, that Langell had hit pay
dirt, t Previous pan n lugs netted from
25 cents to $3.
The shaft is about 30 feet deep,
and the methods of extracting the
gold are with hoist and an old fash
ioned rocker. Two helpers and
Langell do the work.
Iingetl started the shaft a couple
of years ago, and was rained out last
winter. Tho last month he renewed
activity and has plenty of vocal
assistance. Ho was persuaded by
friends to keep digging. He did, and
a few $8 pans are expected.
The $8 pan yesterday afternoon
never ruffled tho serenity of the
county seat. It started a lot of stories
about 160 pans in the late 70's.
