CITY TAKES STEPS
TO PREVENT RAIL-
III accordance with InntriK'tliinn he
rocolvod frum the mayor uml city
council lust night. City Attorney John
if. Cnrkin this forenoon telcKrsiuhcd
the public Bervico commission for un
early lienring on the illxiiiauliinK of
tlio JackRonvlllo-Moilford railroad
problem, at which can be worked out
I lie beat solution to protect the In
terests of both William Barniim, the
owner ot the defunct road, and tho
city.
At tho council meetlnd Mr. Carkln
wiis also instructed to keep a wary
eye out to prevent Mr. Darnum's pos
sible removal of the rails alons the
rlKht-ofway until the public sorvlee
commission, which postponed the
hearing last week for 15 days, has
acted.
Word reached tho city officials yes
terday that Mr. llarnum. ignoring the
15 days' postponement of the hearing,
had already begun to tear up the rails
at tho Jacksonville end of the line, for
tho purpose of selling them. It 1b
understood, that Jacksonville officials
sent a strong protest to the public
service commission. '' ' '
It seems that tho old railroad no
longer uaK a franchise In this city,
that franchise having expired and
been declared void by the city gov
ernment a Innir time turn nnil flint liv
tho term:? of the franchise tho wires.
IhiIoh and such property become the
property of the city. The council has
also learned thut months am Mr. Ilar
nuiu hud removed the poles and trolley
wires from the city, and sold them.
The Medford city council wants the
remaining property unmolested until
the rights of both the. city and Mr.
llarnum are adjusted at a public serv
ice commission lieurlng. The council
especially wants to prevent, tho re
moval of the rulls until a stipulation
has been Imposed on Mr. llarnum that
it the rails are removed he must place
the city streets along the right-of-way
in porrect paved order again.
Mayor Alenderfor and most of the
councilmen deem that tho right-of-way,
apparently now valueless, should
be kept intact and in the possession
of the city, as it might eventually be
come an important factor in the future
development of the city. The mayor
lolnt8 out that the same delapidnted
! condition existed up to a few years
I ago with the old Pacific & Eastern
iroad, and-that if that road had been
torn up and removed Medford would
not now have the big Owen-Orecon
lumber mill, with what is now a finely
equipped logging railroad.
Ill Darkest Flllladelpllla.
XKW YOItlC. Much bootlegging
and tho great influx of foreigners are
among tho reasons by the Itev, Dr.
Joseph Kort -Newton, universalis!, is
going to Philadelphia where he will
become an Kplscopnlinn preacher.
