A CONSTITUTION Day trinncr will lo licl.l in Miulfoid to
niflJrt, under the auspices of severs! ltienl civic organizations.
This cl'fnrt to make Constitution Day an ohsei'vunco of more
local iinpoi'tancu is u coiuniendulilt! one.
There is a great deal of talk nowadays ubont the virtues of this
venerable document, but those who talk the loudest arc frciniently
those who know leust about it, and arc the fiirtlicrest removed from
it in spirit. '
Charles K, Hughes, former Secretary of State, hit the nail on
the head the other day, when he said the most ominous sign in
America today is the growth of bigotry and intolerance.
All thoughtful observer agree most emphatically, with Mr
Hughes. The Constitution is not alone a liill of rights; It is u vig
orous condemnation of human wrongs. It not only points out what
the government must do, it points out what the government must
not do, and what the individual may do.
Personal liberty and human freedom, an end to tyranny physical
and spiritual, these fundamental principles form the letter und the
spirit of this immortal document.
The more familiar, therefore, the people become witli the Const i
tution the better for them and the belter for this country. In fact.
the Constitution, like the Jiible, should be a best seller. It should
not bo given lip service and then forgotten. It should not be read
once and then placed on the shelf. It should be read frequently,
referred to often, and Constitution Day is an excellent timo to
begin.
