DEER PLENTIFUL,
BROUGHT TO CITY
While hundreds of sportsmen from
Medford and tho valley wero out )n
the hills yesterday enjoying the open
ing of tho deer sooson. not all wei
fortunato enough to bog meat, but a
number' or huntors returned to the
city last night with dead bucks. The
exact amount of venison slaughtered
during yesterday will not be known
until tho rest of tho hunters return,
but from reports '. already In it is
known that the deer are plentiful this
soason,. more so than last year. ;'
The largest deer killed so far. as
was known hero this noon was a 141
pound buck which T. B. Lowd. district
flro warden, ,brought down yesterday,
morning at Butte canyon In the Dead
Indian country. Hugo Von-Hellen and
Kloyd Plcklo, who hunted with
"Heavy" Austin, the mountaineer, as
guide In the Dend Indlun country,,
ulso roturncd with a fuirly largo
buck, as did Dan Collier, whose com
panion wns a good Bhot. Tho latter
two hunted In tho Pleasant creek scq
tlon. i
Mr. Collier, who Is inultoVruthful on
occasion, asserts that they scared up
ii .flock of !ll ,deer early yesterday
morning, which took flight in all di
rections, causing the two men to
shoot quickly and promiscuously, dt
I is. understood that Dan finally became
so excited that he threw down Ms
nun. drew his trusted fountain pen
and unsuccessfully charged after tho
covey, of scared bucks,'. Much inter
est is being manifested by local hunt
ers in tho matter 'of who captures the
largest deer, mule-talla excepted, kill
oil between Sept. 10th and 20th, the
first 10 days of the season, and by
so doing will win the silver cup trophy
offered by the Young Hardware store.
