War which has been waging on all
fronts in the poultry world in recent
months will lie. given a big impetus
in the poultry show to he staged al
the coming Jackson county industrial
fair, Aledford. September Hi to lit, it
was announced by Secretary S. 1.
IJrown.
A big drive on slackers, national in
scope, will he launched by poultry
cxpeits at the Jackson county indus
trial fair. Culling of all flocks in this
locality will he carried on systemat
ically ami the slackers among the
poultry fraternity sent to the market.
Poultry specialists will urge farmers
to get rid of their Inferior stock, old
hens, fat hens, hens that want to set
frequently and do not care to lay eggs,
ami hens with a weak disposition will
be ticketed for the guillotine.
"The value of pure-bred sires has
been thoroughly proved In the dairy
cattle business by the increased size
of cream checks," says W. J. Warner,
superintendent of the poultry show.
"The sumo results can be obtained in
poult ry if farmers will select good
roosters to head t heir flocks each
year. A scrub hen will ordinarily lay
about JiiO eggs a year, while a bird
of good breeding, from flocks that
have been culled, will average about
'250 eggs. Not only will the egg pro
duction be doubled but the meat pro
duced increased, und all at no in
crease In cost of feeding, for a good
bird will not eat any more than a
scrub bird."
All of the leading breeds of poultry
including American, Asiatic Mediter
ranean, Kngllsh, Polish, Continental,
Hamburg and Orientals will be ex
hibited ul the fair. In addition there
will ho the customary exhibits of
ducks, geese and turkeys. llutries
will close September 15.

WASHINGTON. Auir. 27. (A. IV)
The special commission on the pro
po.ed Columbia river basin reclama
tion project reported to Secretary
Work today that tlm time had not
arrived when local ami national in
terests required the proposed con
struction. The report pointed out that the
cost of the project had been fixed at
$l!3.J0.0i0, which is ir,x an acre,
and declared the bureau of reclama
tion has not the information needed
i to formulate a development plan n
, costly and complex as the one out
I lined.
I "Your com mission has no doubt
J that the time will come when local
and national interests will require the
construction of these works and the
utilization of these Immeasurably val-
uable resources," said the report. "It
(does not believe, however, that this
I' time has arrived.
"So far as const met ton is coii
. cerned, the procedure of the pact
.could be followed, but building these
I irrigation works would not of itself
insure solvent developments or create
real opportunities not sil tiers. Past
experience in this and other irrigated
countries is conclusive Hint solvent
reels mat Ion requires a program of
settlement and farm development.'
The Screen

.Milton sills ii Star.
"The Making of O'Malley." W the
current feature picture at the Hunt's
Cralerian. starring Milton Wills.
Many times has Milton Sills been
featured, but as Patrolman O' Ma I ley
he makes his star debut. And such a
big, kindly, shining star as he is.
The story .is woven around a big
lriili copper on the New York police
force, but there is an interlock so im
penetrable, almost, that a little child
appears imnii of the time to be Hie
chief actor. It is the little child and
tin big policeman who get a grip on
one's heart, ami each is possessed of
native finalities calculated to do that.
Milton Sills is so fine one forgets
he is screen acting and is fairly car
ried away by the story.
