SHEEP INDUSTRY
NEAR EKD OF RISE
IN MARKET PRICE
WASHINGTON. Aug. 20. .(A. P.)
The shonp Industry uppurcutty is
Jiut approuchliig the end of a period
of hifib prices, the depurtment of ag
riculture declared today In an outlook
report ou lambs and wool.
Fairly well sutttained prices for
lambs for the remainder of the year,
but possibly lower prices for Hp ring
lambs In 1926 are to be expected
while the outlook fyr wool. It was
added, la uncertain, with lower prices
probable, next year unless an Increas
ed demand dovelops. -
"Should the number of breeding
ewes and lamb production be further
Increased, as now seems likely, that
would result In an Increased produc
tion of wool In this country, the de
partment continued. .
"The recovery of wool p rives from
the post war depression Is stimulate
Ing frocif;n countries also to Increase
production. The Australian wool crop
is expected to t be. larger than last
year's, and Increases In the numbers
of sheep in Europe also Indicate larger
wool clips there next spring.
"The prospective Increase In sup
ply, however, Is not so great as to
cause 'further . marked decline In
prices unles sthere uhould be a decline
in the demand for woolen goods, a de
cline In the general price level or a
slump In business activity.
"In addition hog prices will prob
ably swing downward and It seems un
likely that beef prices will be main
tained at the high level of this fall.
Further. It seems unlikely that Indus
trial activity will bo continued Indlfl-
iiltcly at the present high level. With
the general level of prices remaining
at the same, the still larger marketing
of lambs, coupled with lower prices
of other, meat animals, would result in
a downward trend of lamb prices be
ginning with the spring of 1926 and
throughout 1927."
Summarizing the,. report the depart-,
jwpnt says: . .
"The sheep Industry apparently Is
Just approaching; the end of a period
of high prices.. ,fi ", ' . 'i
"Further large increases In sheep
production will require buying breed
ing ewes at fancy prices -or holding
valuable stock off the market. The
probabilities are against this stock be
ing relatively as valuable in 1926 or
1927..
"As between sheep and beef cattle,
eonsidf ration should he given to the
possibility that beef prices may tend
upward during 'the next, few years,
while ah nop and wool prices seem like
ly to tend downward. Present beef
prices reflect merely an unusual tem
porary situation, prices during ' tho
next year may bo lower than at pres
ent but wUh an upward trend."

BIG FRUIT MARKET
SEEN IN EUROPE
BY GOVT. EXPERT
. WASHINGTON. .Aug. 20. Edwin
Smith, market specialist of the de
partment of agriculture. returniug
today from Europe where he sur
veyed marketing possibilities, de
clared the European market for
American fresh fruit could be ex
panded if American growers would
produce better quality In adequate
quantities and deliver the produce
in bettor . condition at rettsonablc
prices. -" 1
Tho tuslo of the European for
fresh fruit 1 just as great as that of
the Americans, ho declared, but tho
lack of development of refrigerated
transportation makes fruit avatluble
in Europe- only a short time com
pared with the United States.
"The present indications,' he said,
"are that Europe will absorb as many
American and Canadian apples this
year na lust, although tho English
crop Is better than lust year.
"A heavy crop of apples In Nova
Scotia will somewhat offset Vir
ginia's shortage while In boxed ap
ples British Columbia's reduced crop
will ease up on the competition of
the Pacific coast stutos.
"One of tho topics of conversa
tios among tho members of tho fruit
trade of Groat Britain relates to the
tremendous strides made during the
past years by grapofrult In the Brit
ish Isles. It Jumped from 'one of
the rare exotic fruits seen only In
large centers to a regular article
of trade. t
"Were American producers' to got
behind it with a continued educa
tional program, It seoms certain that
grapefruit might be absorbed in Eu
ropcan markets In large quantities.'
