I-OUTI-AND. Auk. 13. (A. P.)
Oswald West, former governor of Ore
gon, toduy Issued a challenge to Gov.
Walter M, Picrco and Warden Dul
rymplo, uf the state penitentiary for
the three to enter piift Creek cunyon
whero possemcnt believe tho three
escaped convicts are in hiding.
West's challenge was a sequel to a
statement ho gave to a Portland news
paper Thursday, in which he criti
cized the. warden inconncction with
the escape of the prisoners Wednes
day night when two guards and an
other csciiplng convict were killed.
Gov. Pierce . defended tho warden
against West's attack.
"Around the rim of the canyon are
several score men and boys of the
Guard ordered to keep the murderers
surrounded," said West's challenge.
They may shortly bo ordered to en
ter the canyon. Some of them likely
will be shot.
'Now, hore is my proposal to the
Governor:
'I ak him and Dalrymple to meet
me at Pratum school house tomorrow
or Monday morning nt 0 o'clock.
JSuch will arm himself with a rifle
or revolver, as he sees fit. I shall sta
tion myself in the center, with the
Governor and Dalrymple .on either
side. . I shall proceed ahead of them
0 yards. Wo will scour this canyon
thoroughly, ftfr at leust three days, if
we do not find the convicts sooner.

Tho warden attributed litis to the fact
that tho hunters lose their "pep"

he Insists that thoro has been no re
