Asked for an explanation the scientists blame it all upon the
Iliimboldt current, whiijt heretiiforc has flown northwartl u'min
the west coast of Smith America.
But about six or eicht months at'o this current took it into its
head to swerve out to sea and take n lonj? distance sfpiint at Jlio
marvels of San I'cdi'o linrbor. licinst a ciirrent. of ice water, con
tact with the warm waters of the I'aeifie menus rain and cold
weather. These rains it seems may even extend inland to Yuma,
Arizona and make the great American desert blossom as the rose
without the expense of irrigation.
The scientists, therefore, opine that Charley Chaplin,, who is now
in New York City will stay there. Hollywood will eventually
follow suit. For the movie eaineni grinds out no J'ickford curls,
when rain falls two days out of three.
Similar climatic eliniijfes, however, have been predicted before,
and never materialized. The bursting of the T.os Angeles boom
has also been predicted for at least a generation, hut the boom has
boomed on. j
IjOs Angeles will senrcely invest in nn umbrella factory in spite
of (he scientists and the Ilumbodll current. Los Angeles will con
tinue to bask in the sunshine and turn it inlo gold at least milil
tho direful predictions nre fulfilled.
And when -the scientists meet the fundamentalists again, they
better pick their jury a safe distance from Broadway and Spring.
For it will be thumbs down hereafter for scientists in li. A.

"6-13 one knows how much fun we have!" cried May. "We

18-19 yet!" '
"Do you think one could write an 13-16-17 to a tennis ball?"
asked Rd.

since not a few of the old timers
in medical practice and even public
health authorities still acquiesce In
such popular theories. However, no
one has been able to educe uny sci
entific evidence to support these
q 1111 i lit notions. The idea that the
weather, climate, or exposure to tho
elements may have anything to do
with susceptibility to cri Is one
which you must take on faith alone;
It was so "pronounced" bv the pon
derous hut benighted old timers long
before the days of scientific path
oology, back In the era when "night
air" wos deemed unfit to breathe
and red flannel was employed to
frighten off the demons of disease.
But if these quaint fancies do not
explain tho peculiar tendency, what
does account for It? Is It an Inher
ent constitutional deficiency, a fault
In the physical makeup, a flaw In
tho functional integrity, a lack of
something in the child's syatem?
Yes, we are constrained to assume It
must be something of this nature.
I say "we," meaning the medical
profession and particularly the mod
ern sclent Ific profession : 1 do not
use the nffectcd and Impersonal ed
itorial "we," but merely strive to in
terpret here the best scientific' med
ical views of the day. j
It seems to me there is some sci
entific evidence to support this pres-:
ent belief. The belief Is perhaps not
ns yet bo definitely crytdiillzed but I
veu t ure to suggest that the peculiar
susceptibility of certain children to
cri Is due to a vitamin deficiency-
though we do not yet know preeise
ly what a vltlmln is. We do know
that vitamins, unidentified factors
present in certain foods, arc essen
tlal for normal health, growth nnd
f unctionnal integrity, in animals nnd
In man. I think the scientific evi
dence now In hand warrants tho be
lief that this vitamin Is the one
which is so richly present tn plain
cold liver oil (not any mnnufnc
tu red emulnton, tablet, or other no
rlvtttive of cod liver oil) and in a
smaller quaintly in diary butter,
pure raw milk, the yolk of fresh
eggs, rnw rablmge, lettuce, spluarh
and other greens or leafy vege
tables.
The administration of genuine (un
doctored) cod liver oil has been i
lung established principle In the
treatment of certain low grade or
long drawn out (chronic) respiratory
Infections such ns pulmonary tuber
culosis and chronic hronchitls. It
now seems advisable to make use of
thi richest source of the necessary
vitamin In the treatment of the pe
culiar susceptibility to crt in chil
dren, nnd perhaps In some Instnnces
in ndulis. Hut the reader should
not assume that cod liver oil is a
good remedy for acute resptrntory
Infections. 1 nm suggesting It only
for tho prophylactic purpose de
scribed. Sufficient dosage for that
purpose, for the nvernge child,
would be from one-hnlf to one lea
