VICTORIA, U.SC. Aug. ,( Canad
ian Press.) John P. Babcock, deputy
fish commissioner of British Columbia,
today received an official report that
a sea serpent, which children in the
Queen Charlotte islands, in the Pacific
ocean off the province, insisted they
saw, was real.
' "When 1 saw the animal going down
the inlet," wrote John Van Valken
bitrff, who made the report, "lie was
traveling with the tide. He made a
slow, wriggling 'motion, like a land
snake employs when swimming at
leisure. The head and six or eight
feet of the body were above the sur
face". 'When the Berpent submerged Its
body came up In a long spiral like a
rope being dragged over a submerged
object. 1 did not see the tail. The
body was round, or a short oval, dark
green, almost black on the back, grow
ing lighter underneath, with RplotcheH
of black.- The head was rather long
and 1 saw knobs tlmt 1 took for eyes
and nostrils."
Babcock said that the report "to me
hears every mark of sincerity," though
"nothing like that is known to sci
ence," and Ue waH "at n loss to under
stand what the Queen Charlotte island
peoplo have aeon."'
