THE STRANGE CAS9
THERE apours to bo i pntral impression abroad that .'7? si
dent Coolidxe will be "re-elected. Tliis impression is rgt cot
fined to Republicans. At least one riiMier prominent Democrat, from
Kentucky, expressed the opinion the other day, Unit Coolidge will
carry that state in lOUB, by a record plurality, and be didn't sccin
to be tlio least worried by tbc prospect. ,
That is tbc extraoi'diimijy feature of the present political filia
tion. No one seems worried by the prospect, of keeping Mr. Cool
idxe in the White House for mi indefinite period.
Even the third-term bugaboo hasn't been resurrected as yet. Of
course, it will be. The Democrats are not Koinj? to vtive'lhe Repub
licans another term without a struggle, but at the present moment,
(here seems no chance whatever of their K'.'Umg very far, with
this battle-cry, or any other. '
Of course, politics are notoriously uncertain. Any situation may
be transformed over night. A great many things rimy happen in
tbc next two years, as they have happened before. Hut the danger
ef basing the future upon precedents of the past, is that there is no
precedent for "Cautious Oil."
In other words, as far as presidents are concerned, Mr. Coolidgc
is something entirely new. Nothing like him bus ever aipeared in
the White lloiise, and as far as we can learn, no political situation
resembling the present one has ever been experienced before.
Heretofore popular Presidents have kept at the bead o? the
procession. President Coolidgc is not even in it. '. ,
Men like Roosevelt and Wilson retained thejr power by sheer per
sonal force, supplemented in tbc first case by charm and animal
magnetism, in tbc second case by intellectual and moral leadership. ,
President Coolidgc may have these qualities, but he certainly
has never used theln.
Then there have been the likeable Presidents, Hardin;'; and
McKinlcy for example, who held popular esteem largely through
the affections.
President Coolidgc has Ihe respect of the people, but the -world

i Answer For the small house the

Judgment, benrtuse it works best when
fairly good ventilation is provided.
That Is the main objection to steam or
hot water heating it seems to be as
efficient, if not mor"e efficient, when
ventilation is poorest. The factor of
humidity Is independent of the meth
od of heating employed. Unless many
gallons, twenty to forty, tue evapor
ated daily the humidity is bound to be
below the hygionlc limit in un arti
ficially i warmed - house. For larger
buildings the simple hot air furnace is
usually inefficient, 1 suppose steam
heating or hot water heating is most
economical in the fuel cost, but my
preference Is for hot air heating as the
most hygienic, provided tho proper in
door temperature is suitable to the oc
cupants of tho house, That tempera
ture is from GO to 68 degrees F. and
never higher. Ho your term, warm air
heating, is probably better than call
ing it hot air heating.
Napping After Dinner
Is it harmful In any way to take a
nap after dinner? I enjoy lying clown
especially after Sunday-dinner. Many
friends tell me It Is harmful because
It docs not give dinner enough tlmo to
digest. I have heard that they have
rest periods in sanitariums when pa
tients must lie In bed after meals.
Ko I can't quite see where a nap is
harmful. (L.)
Answer Digestion is an automatic
process, llko breathing and the beat
ing of tho heart over which wo have no
conscious control. Therefore, it Is un
necessary to sit up with a meal while
it is undergoing digestion. It is natur
al to sleep after a hearty meal. It Is
healthful- to nap a whilo after any
meal. If you like. Of course this is
not advisable for overfed people, for
laxy people, but It Is good medicine for
skinny folk, for very active, energetic
or "nervous" people such as Infest san
itarlums.
