FORGOTTEN LAND GRANT M'NHCO
iPRINCEOFWALESONi
BY IMPOSTOR, IN
REVENGEFUL MOOD
. Over 70 men fieetdnir work, believed
a mun yesterday afternoon, who gave
his name aa Grant, that thcro watt a
forest fire covering an area of many
hundred acrea In the Crater Lako Na
tional Park, and that fire fighters
were noededto fight It, The man
was at Efttes pool hall and other
Front Htreet eatubliahmenu yesterday
afternoon "hiring" the men, promis
ing them that their pay commenced
aa soon as they were hired to fight
the fictitious fire.
The man even hired four trucks
from the Eads transfer company to
give the Impression that he meant
business in taking the men to the
Bcene of the blase. He stated he
would set out lust night, but finally
told the men depurture would bo
made this morning. However, when
. morning arrived he had departed for
other parts, leaving them to wonder
what It was all about.
When one of the attaches of the lo
cal forest service office Investigated
. the affair last night by going to Kates
pool hall and there meeting the man,
he was Informed that Superintendent
Thomson of tho Crater . Jjxko Na
tional Park had sent Grant to the
city to recruit an army of fire fighters
to fight a large fire In the park. Ef
forts were at once made to get In
touch with park headquarters, but
were unsuccessful until this morning,
when the superintendent Informed the
local office thero wok no fire within
the boundaries and the man giving
. his name as Grant was an lm poster.
The description of Grant tallied close
ly with one of the employes of tho
park service who was recently dis
charged, and U is believed that the act
of hiring so many men to fight a fire
which was not burning was merely
an act of revenge because of his dis
missal. : v
Grant is among the missing, and
perhaps is now thinking he has
avenged his discharge, but federal of
ficials are searching for him and if
caught charges will bo placed against
. him.
Superintendent Thomson warns local-people
no man is a representative
, of his office unless he has proper
credentials denoting his station, and
that any person representing his of
