disappeared he wore a gray hat, Krny
work shirt and overalls. He Is slightly
stooped, very deaf and somewhat bald.
Several teeth in front and on the left
side are gold. He suffered a stroke
of paralysis several weeks ago but
had recovered sufficiently to visit
down town. He left home Saturday
morning for a visit In the business
section and no trace has been found
of him since. Information was given
yesterday concerning Bertram's dis
appearance to Chief of Police McNabb
by J. W. Hulfhlll. with whom he was
living. Anyone having information
concerning his whereabouts Is asked
to get in touch with either Chief Mc
Nabb or. Mr. Halfhill. Friends fear
for his safety.
H. G. Enders, Jr., will continue as
chief executive ln the Llthlan .Hotel
corporation. At a meeting of the
board of directors' today, the old offi
cers were unanimously re-elected for
the coming year resulting tn II. Q.
Enders, Jr., president; J. W. McCoy,
vice president; J. W. Hardy, treasurer.
It was voted to purchase an electric
sign to be mounted at the top of the
building. J. V. McCoy, H. K. Tom
linson and H, O. Enders, Jr., were
appointed as a committee to attend to
its selection.
Oakland Commnndery and band of
Knights Templar . aboard a special
train en route to Seattle to attend
the national triennial conclave have
notified Malta Commnndery of this
city that the entire delegation will
stop, off here to spend an hour while
the drill team of the commandery will
drill on the street. ' The team Is the
champion Knights Templnr team of
California and was picked to repre
sent the state at Seattle nt the conclave.-
There will be scores of com
peting teams. The visitors will ar
rive at 5:15 p. m. and will leave at
6:15. 'There will be about 150 people
and perhaps 25 cars will be needed to
bring them up from the station. Re
freshments of fruit and the llthla
water will be furnished the guests 'at
the pavilion n the park.
At assembly period the recent death
of C. E. Mulkey, county superinten
dent of Coos county was announced
by Director George A, Briscoe,, who
read; a number of sentiments expres
sive of the regret at his death and In
dicating the great esteem and respect
in which he was held In his commu- i
nity and 'In the state,- and the loss
sustained In the decease of this well
known educator.' In token of respect,
assembly, was dismissed for the day.
There are a number of Coos county
teachers in attendance nt the summer
session at the normal, which closes
this Friday. '
At assembly period this morning a
dramatization of a fairy story suitable
for third grade reproduction In two or
three rehearsals was put on by a
number from Miss Beardsley's class
In primary language methods. To
morrow there will be a demonstration
of what may be done In five weeks1,
work in music, directed by Miss Leoha
Marsters, using pupils attending prac
tice school.
James Putman and family spent the
week end In a trip to Crater and Dia
mond lakes. . . - . r

choir , and their families had a most
delightful outing at By bee bridge re
cently All the goodies that go with a
picnic repast' were 'there to add to
the enjoyment. This is but one of
the happy times the choir has to

Mr. and - Mrs. . Ross Gullcy arrived
Monday for a short, visit tn Ashland.
They ' leave Tuesday- for- San Jose,
Calif., where they will visit Mrs.
Gulley's people.
The Fraley family enjoyed a family
reunion recently prior to the return
of Floyd Fraley to Berkeley, Calif.
The families of Milton, Floyd and
Earl Fraley were all gathered at the
C. W. Fraley home, where the rela
tives all were happy In the visit and
in the feast that Is a part ot family
reunions, Karl Fraley will teach at
Alameda, next year.
Miss Elsie Crowson who has been
visiting tn Portland, returned to her
home this week.

family of her brother, the Rev. V. K
Allison and other friends In the city.
Mrs. J. S. Sweet, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde
R. Sweet and son of Santa Rosa and
Mrs. Jennie Goodyear-' of Ashland
made the Crater Lake trip today, ar
riving home about seven. , They are
guests of Mrs. Goodyear and. of Mr.
and Mrs. G. O. Eubanks. Mrs.. P. 8.
Rose and children of Pacific Grove
have also arrived and. will visit for
some time at the home of her parents,
Mr." and Mrs.'G. G. Eubanks,
Mr. and Mrs. Swltzer have as house
guest Mrs. Swltzer's Bister, Mrs. Char

Judge C. M. Thomas for hearing argu
ments on motions pending in the suit
of the Ashland Baptist church against
the First Baptist church of Ashland,
for possession of the church property.
The Inst development tn the relig
ious rumpus came last week, when
io Ashland Baptist church members
took possession of the church build
ing, and denied nd mission to the First
Baptist church members, who had
been in charge since last winter.
According to reports from Ashlund,
the present possessors stay In the
church night and day to prevent re
capture. -
The motions' pending before the
court request that certain paragraphs
of the original complaint, cburglng
"pdoselytlng," and "mesmeric influ
ence" be stricken, and that the Ash
land Baptist church set "forth in par
ticularity" in what respect the con
tending faiths differ.
The Ashland Baptist church ad
heres to the established Bupilst faith,
and the First Baptist church are ex
ponents of the ''Almee Mcpherson
Four-Square Gospel."

Three mills tn the Lawrence district
announced wage- reductlpne of ten
per, cent following, the example of
the American 'Woolen company and
other plante which gave notice of
wnw cuta In the last few daya. The
mill, posting notices today enploy
approximately 1000 operatives.
The International Worsted mills
and Belden Worsted mills In Moth
uen will reduce wages July 27, while
the Smith and Dove Manufacturing
company at Andover set the date at
august I.
