WITH Jlie exception of Mr. Bryan, everyone appears , relieved
that the monkey circus is over. Air. Bryan, who had his re
.marks' of yesterday expunged from the record, apparently regards
liis legal victory as of small consequence compared with the restric
tion of his oratorical opportunities, and the expected paens of a
fundamentalist triumph, aro at the present "writing, lacking.
Where there is a will, and a wind, however, there' is a way,
and the Great Commoner, denied further opportunity in court, will
issue an anti-monkey catchism, and stump the country in behalf of
an anti-evolution amendment to the constitution.
Oh Hum! There seems to be enough genuine trouble in the
world and a sufficient number of destructive influences afloat, not
to waste time fighting over .Science and the Bible. But that is a
struggle upon which Mr. Bryan apparently insists. .. '
As predicted iii this column several weeks ago, the Dayton opera
bouffc has settled nothing. Teacher Scopes has been convicted, but
he believes more strongly in evolution and academic freedom than
lie did before. So do the thousands of his supporters.
On the other hand, Mr. Bryan
now just as they believed before
tinue to believe, regardless of future court decisions. . i-
Xo man's spiritual convictions can be changed by law. The only
question, therefore,' involved in
expression can be legally restricted.
As we remarked before, this question can only be decided by the
Supreme Court. That is where the caso is apparently going. -Consequently,
the prospect at tho moment, has some cheering
features. ; 1-or wc don t bclievo

Mr. Mondell. was the outstanding
