Tho earliest ' Investigation of the
black sand a of tho I'aclflc coast of
which thero Is authentic record was
carried on by Prof. W. IV Ulako in
J 803, who found platinum nntJ ii'l
dosmluin to the extent of 10 to 30
per cent of tho gold. Ills expe
rience showed that the farther north
he went on tho California and Ore
gon coast the greater proportion o(
platinum to gold. Subsequent in
vestigation showed this to bo true an
far north us Coos county, but It Is
not true farther north. In fact,
the Alaskan coast hns so far proved
barren In platinum; but I Hake's
statement was accepted as the rule,
with tho result much fruitiest ex
ploration for platinum wus made
north nt Coos county. In 1X73 Prof,
ft, Hi) lima n made an examination of
tho heavy residual sands obtained In
placer mining In Butte county, Cal.,
and showed them to contain: Chro
mlte, gold platinum, lridosmium
( more abundant than platinum) zir
con, magnetite, llmonlle, rutlle, gar
itet and epldotn. He also mentioned
diamonds, topaz and pyrllo. In 1894,
J. A. Kdman first suggested the use
of percussion tables for separating
gold and platinum from black, sands:

COfltT ROOM, DAYTON, Tenn.,
July 17. (A. P.) Tho state of Ten
nessee tuade a formal motion at the
triui of John T. Scopes today to
excludo testimony of scientists from
tho trial of (he case.
William Jennings Brynn closed the
argument for the state, In part, as
follows:
"If the children of today believe
some of the things taught In the
schools, they are taught to scoff- at
the religion of their fathers.
"No person has tho right to say
that they shall rob tho children of
their faith In Ood and send them

The court nsked Mr. Bryan if he
thought evolution involved tho ciues
tion of tho virgin birth of Christ.
. "I am perfectly willing to answer
your question," said Mr. Bryan, "but
I do not think evolution deserves to
bo called a theory, It is an hypothe
sis." "Evolutionary theory has failed
and today thero is not a scientist
who has traced one species to an
other and yet they call us ignora
muses and bigots hocauso we won't
throw away, our Bibles." ,
' "Not only have they no truth but
they cannot find the. beginning.
"Christian" evolutionists said that
God was back there somewhere, but
they do not say where he was.
"Evolution that, begins with noth
ing nnd ends no where," was a de
scription Mr. Bryan used'. "And yet.
they would undermine tho faith of
these little children In that God who
stands back of everything," he said.
"Jf the theory is that -God did not
create th'- cell, then.it could not be
reconciled with tho Bible, could i ?"
Judge Itaulston asked Mr. Bryan.
"Certainly not," he answered
"More than half tho scientists do
not believe there Is a personal God."
